Freising

– The Freising judo club started with a total of five athletes at the open Bavarian individual championships in ID judo.

The organizers were the Bavarian Judo Association with the department "Integration and Judo for the Disabled" and the organization Special Olympics Bavaria (SOBY) as part of their existing cooperation.

The organizing Budo-Club Ismaning with 85 athletes from Austria as well as Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria was able to record a record number of participants in the title fights.

With a second place and four third places, all five representatives of the Freising Judo Club made it onto the podium.

In addition, after the long Corona break, they knew how to convince their coaching team with an extremely positive attitude and high level of combative commitment.

Rewarded with medals

In the weight class up to 60 kilograms of competition class (WK) 3, Josef Machtl had to bow to the more experienced competition in his first tournament.

In the end, however, he was rewarded with bronze.

Oliver Falkner had a similar experience in the 66-kilo category (WK 3).

Falkner was able to score with a hip throw, but it wasn't quite enough to win.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Up to 100 kilograms (WK 2), Florian Lindner had to deal with very strong opponents against whom he pulled off the affair more than respectably.

For his trainer Karl-Heinz Kiefer, he would have deserved more than third place.

A fighter fell victim to arithmetic

Markus Wrubel was able to win two of his three fights with ippon in the class over 100 kilograms of WK 3, but then fell victim to arithmetic.

Because several fighters were tied on points, the absolute duration of the fight had to decide on the placements - and Wrubel was at a disadvantage there.

Over 100 kilos (WK 2), Lothar Schmidt started the tournament optimally with a fast ippon through Tai-otoshi (body fall).

Against his second opponent Paul Vogl from JC Neunkirchen Schwarzatal, the Freisinger simply couldn't find a solution despite a temporary lead and had to settle for second place and the silver medal after the defeat.

Good to know

The international term ID-Judo stands for "intellectual disability" and refers to the mental handicap of judo athletes.

In the cathedral city of Freising, the judo club cooperates with Lebenshilfe and, under the direction of Karl-Heinz Kiefer and Monika Schicho, offers appropriate training for athletes with mental disabilities.
