The World Judo Association has given its consent to hosting the prestigious event in Jerusalem • On the other hand, the Israeli association is trying to raise the funds that include hosting and prizes for the contestants • Moshe Ponti: "We will do everything to make it happen"

As first published in Israel Hayom, the World Judo Championship is expected to be held in Israel in June next year, just before the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

The World Judo Federation (IJF) gave its consent to hold the event in Israel, while the Israeli union is currently trying to raise the money, the total cost of which is estimated at 70 million shekels, with just obtaining the license for the event being 12 million dollars.

In addition, there is also the matter of the monetary prizes, which stands at 2 million dollars, and the big question is the location of the championship, as 'Israel Hayom' learned, when the world president Marius Wieser, was satisfied with the Peace Arena in Jerusalem, where the Masters was held, but the big problem is the holding of the competition at the weekend, which is not possible in the city.

If the event is held by Yad Eliyahu, the area of the arena itself is too small to accommodate the requirements of the world association, so they will have to erect and close a certain part of the stands.

Moshe Ponti, chairman of the Israeli Judo Association, said: "We closed a long time ago, but it is still not happening.

We are promised funds, but we still haven't received so that we can guarantee the world championship here, when I hope we can raise everything needed to bring this huge event to Israel."

Regarding the Grand Slam that will start tomorrow in Tel Aviv, he added: "This is the most difficult tournament I've had, but as difficult as it is, I can do much more. I hope the audience will come to the competition, we have an excellent team in both men and women, I hope there were medals that the general public can be happy about.

"I realized that I need to bring competitions to the country, so that our athletes can enter the Olympics more easily. Solomon Hall is crowded and brings them to success, I wanted them to see and practice more judo in Israel and this is what happens, month after month, year after year," Ponti concluded.
