After his first Champions League game in goal for FC Bayern, Yann Sommer received a lot of praise from the Munich bosses around Oliver Kahn and his teammates.

Those responsible saw the 1-0 win in the round of 16 first leg at Paris Saint-Germain as confirmation that the Swiss national keeper had found and signed the right replacement for captain Manuel Neuer (36), who was out until the end of the season after breaking his lower leg.

"That's what characterizes a goalkeeper at Bayern Munich, that you don't get so much to do, but when you're needed, you're there," said Kahn about 34-year-old Sommer, who was partly responsible for that after Kingsley Coman's goal not the compensation for Paris fell.

Sommer's biggest action was a parade against the PSG star Kylian Mbappé, who ran freely towards him.

Sommer deflected the shot with his head.

In this "very, very important situation" he "kept it up and kept the team in the game," said former national goalkeeper Kahn on the scene in the 73rd minute.

Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich also spoke of "a great parade" that was "totally important".

Sommer has contributed to the success.

Board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić praised the unbeaten summer with Bayern for his start in Munich: “From the first game he played as if he had been there for a long time.

He plays well.

He exudes calm.

You have to give a compliment.

He also has confidence in himself.«

In January, Bayern had signed for around eight million from Borussia Mönchengladbach and given a contract until June 2025.

“I'm getting used to the game I have in Munich.

It might be a little less work.

But it's clear that if we play at the same level in the Champions League, our goal will have a bit of work to do," he said after the game in Paris.

But he also praised the people in front: “I think we defended a lot on the defensive, once again.

And of course that's a gift as a goalkeeper when the people in front defend like that."

Sommer returns to Mönchengladbach next Saturday.

Then it is for him in Borussia Park with FC Bayern against his former club for important Bundesliga points.
