We're off: Baruch Shmailov won the first round of the Tel Aviv Grand Slam Israel today

The tournament kicks off at the Shlomo Group Hall in Tel Aviv • Baruch Shmailov and Timna Nelson-Levi will take to the mat later today • 41 Israelis will take part in the competition


The Tel Aviv Judo Grand Slam starts this morning (Thursday) at Hichal Shlomo in Tel Aviv, with the participation of about 400 athletes from 52 countries. 

This is the eighth time in a row that Israel has hosted a major international event in the sport, all of this in preparation for the World Championship that is expected to be held here next year. The current competition gives athletes a lot of points on the way to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. 

Among the prominent names that will enter the ring today: Yam Volchek, Matan Kokoliev, Tal Flicker and Baruch Shamailov in men.

When in the women's division, Shira Roshni, Gefen Primo and Tinama Nelson Levy will be on the mat.

Baruch Shamailov - the Masters champion in Jerusalem and ranked third in the world, opened against the Australian Natan Katz and had no difficulty winning on penalties, to advance to the next level.
