Formula 1: Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes - this is what the new racing cars look like

2023-02-17T13:47:55.290Z

Red Bull relies on the world champion colors, the Ferrari is not completely red and Mercedes wants to go back to the top with a black design: the Formula 1 racing teams have presented their cars.

Will world champion Max Verstappen defend his title in this car and win the world championship triple?

At least he continues to drive the RB19 racing car in the classic dark blue design: "We had a lot of success with the paintwork, why should we change anything?" said Verstappen.

This year, team boss Christian Horner expects greater resistance from the competition for Ferrari and Mercedes.

"They'll come back strong and have two fast drivers," Horner said at last.

And there could be another reason: Because of the budget violation in the 2021 season, Verstappen's team is starting the season that begins on March 5 with a handicap - Red Bull has to make do with ten percent less development time in the wind tunnel.

While the competition sometimes only showed pictures of their new livery,

Ferrari

already went to their own track in Fiorano - traditionally all in red, presented on Valentine's Day.

First, Charles Leclerc took the wheel for a few laps, then it was his teammate Carlos Sainz's turn.

"After two difficult years, 2022 was a good step forward, but we only finished second in the drivers' and teams' championships," said Leclerc: "We've now addressed the car's weaknesses and we want the title."

The SF23 will therefore be an evolution of last year's car, with changes to the front wing and sidepods.

The wings also catch the eye for other reasons: As in the 1980s and 1990s, they are black again – and the rear wing does not have a sponsor lettering, but the name that obliges to success: Ferrari.

A year without a race win for Lewis Hamilton, a year without a title for the team, after eight consecutive

constructors' world championships for

Mercedes .

Something had to happen with the Silver Arrows.

The F1 W14 is now completely black again.

"It's about performance, not looks," Hamilton said.

In order to comply with the weight limit of 798 kilograms, the paint on cars in Formula 1 is scraped off, the carbon parts are black.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was silent about how much weight the missing paint actually saves: "Of course it's not tons, but it shows the will."

The bolide from 2022 bounced up and down at high speed, but it still has narrow sidepods.

"The problems we had last year, especially with the bouncing, were not due to the geometry of the car," emphasizes Technology Director Mike Elliott.

The chassis is now significantly lighter, and the front wheel suspension, cooling and aerodynamics concept have been revised.

"We may not be the fastest from the start, but we have the potential to close the gap quickly," said Hamilton, who will continue to team up with George Russell.

Should one of the two drop out, Mick Schumacher will step in as a reserve driver.

Pretty in pink:

Alpine

and its drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly want to complete the first three races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia in pink racing cars - as a concession for the main sponsor.

Only then does it go back to the well-known blue design.

Alpine finished fourth in the Constructors' Championship last season, which is just the minimum target now.

"The gap to third place was big, we have to close it," said team boss Otmar Szafnauer, "to do this we have to develop faster than any other team out there." Sophia Flörsch is also new at Alpine, the young racing driver was in the junior academy recorded and thus comes a step closer to Formula 1.

New team boss, new driver, new car: That's McLaren

's plan

for the 2023 season. However, new team boss Andrea Stella admits that the launch version of the MCL60 is not yet what the designers envision.

McLaren didn't completely redesign the shapes, but refined them throughout.

It stays at a high air intake, followed by a downward ramp.

An undercut stretches backwards under the air intake.

This should make the racing car easier to drive for Lando Norris and his new teammate Oscar Piastri.

Alfa Romeo,

on the other hand, not only branded its car in red and black, but also made changes to the rear, the gearbox, the rear suspension and the cooling system.

However, the racing team continues to rely on the proven driver duo of the past year: Valtteri Bottas brings years of experience from a top team, Guanyu Zhou wants to improve after a solid but unspectacular debut year - with the exception of the rollover at Silverstone.

According to Chief Technology Officer Dan Fallows , Aston Martin

's new car will be

"95 percent" different from its predecessor.

These include a revised front wing, new sidepods with a more aggressive, curved inner ramp, and a different engine cover.

"We want to get up the grid and challenge the teams at the top - and you can't do that by sitting back and being conservative," Fallows continued.

The two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who takes over the cockpit from Sebastian Vettel, should help.

In addition, Lance Stroll continues to drive for the racing team.

The US racing team

Haas

with returning Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen has ushered in the new Formula 1 year.

At the presentation of the VF23, however, the new color scheme was only revealed in photos, the racing car was still that of the previous year.

The team colors are black, white and red, with black dominating unlike in the past.

The public will probably not see the actual VF23 until February 23, at the start of the three-day test drive in Bahrain.

So far, Alpha Tauri

has

also only given a glimpse of the new design with new title sponsor, but chief engineer Jody Egginton explained that the car should primarily be seen as an evolution of previous years anyway.

Alpha Tauri saw the greatest weaknesses in aerodynamics last year.

In addition, the AT04 should be lighter.

The team now competes with Nyck De Vries and Yuki Tsunoda as drivers.

The fact that the team buys a lot from Red Bull remains unchanged.

Williams

finished last season in last place in the constructors' championship.

Now the racing team wants to be "aerodynamically more efficient" with the FW45, the car has more downforce and improved handling.

Williams continues to drive in the blue base color with the diamond pattern and some red accents.

Alexander Albon and newcomer Logan Sargeant will then be behind the wheel.
