For the first time ever in sailing: an all-Israeli podium in Lanzarote Israel today

2023-02-18T06:48:34.143Z

Shahar Tibi finished first, Sharon Kantor second and Maya Morris third - and together they completed a great achievement for the Israeli team in windsurfing

A great achievement for the Israeli windsurfing team, which managed to place three representatives on the podium: Shahar Tibi with the gold medal, Sharon Kantor with the silver and Maya Morris with the bronze.

This is the first time that there is a full Israeli podium in a graduate competition ever.

As in the opening competition of the season, national coach Shahar Tzuberi's team started with a storm, with five Israeli representatives in the top ten on the first and second day of the competition, which included 58 of the best surfers in the world.

On the third day of the competition, the wind dropped and the sailings were completely cancelled.

Today, the organizers hoped to hold two cruises, which would have enabled the medal cruises, which require eight qualifiers.

The seventh cruise started with Shahar Tibi leading the competition, followed immediately by Sharon Kantor.

In the competition between the two in sailing, Tibi won and kept first place overall.

Maya Morris' amazing ride, which finished first, catapulted her from sixth overall straight to third, while Katie Spichkov dropped to fifth overall.

At this point, the organizers of the competition decided that the winds would not allow another sailing, so the medal sailings were canceled and the final ranking remained intact, despite an appeal by Katie Spichkov.

"The Israeli team presented our abilities here in an amazing way," said Shahar Tibi after the victory.

"All the best in the world competed here and it's fun to know what our level is already in the competitions at the beginning of the season.

"Soon the test cruises will start, and it is true that only one of us will get the ticket to Paris, but the work in the team and with Shahar is great and proves itself."

In men, Yoav Cohen placed eighth at the start of the day, while Yoav Omer and Tom Reuveni were outside the top ten.

Two excellent cruises for Reuvani, which he finished in 3rd and 5th places, put him in eighth place overall and into the quarterfinals of the medal cruises.

Reuveni finished the quarter-finals eighth and Cohen immediately followed him in ninth place.
