Linus Straßer clearly missed the medal he was aiming for at the end of the Alpine Ski World Championships in the slalom in Courchevel.
After a botched performance in the final, the 30-year-old from Munich only came in ninth and was even behind his team-mate Sebastian Holzmann, who surprisingly finished fifth.
Straßer, who started the second run as a promising fourth in the first round, couldn't cope with the changing course of his trainer Bernd Brunner and ended up 0.69 seconds behind the new world champion Henrik Kristoffersen from Norway.
Silver in a crazy race went to Greece's AJ Ginnis (0.20 seconds back) ahead of Alex Vinatzer (Italy/0.38).
"There are nicer things, I had hoped for more," said Straßer, very distressed, on ARD.
Holzmann, who has never finished in the top ten in the World Cup, was only 0.24 seconds short of a medal after an impressive race to catch up from 18th place.
"It was very difficult.
But I did my thing to the end,' he said.
Kristoffersen went from 15th place to gold.
The German Ski Association (DSV) leaves the title fights in France with two medals: Alexander Schmid triumphed on Wednesday in the parallel competition with gold, Lena Dürr won bronze in the women's slalom on Saturday.
