Novak Djokovic, the number 1 tennis player in the world, has applied for a special permit to enter the United States to play in the March tournaments despite the fact that he is not vaccinated against Corona. The 35-year-old Serbian will return to action next week at the Dubai tournament and from there he hopes to fly to the United States to participate in the Indian Wells tournament and then in Miami.

"My plans for the rest, after Dubai, depend on the US," he told reporters today (Wednesday) after an open training session he held in Belgrade. "I'm waiting for an answer, it's not up to me.

I believe I will know soon, things are in progress.

I thank the communities of Indian Wells and Miami for their support, they want me to have the opportunity to take part in tournaments.

I hope for a positive decision soon, but it's not in my hands."

In January, the Americans extended the vaccination requirement for foreign tourists, at least until April 10.

Djokovic himself stated in the past that he would rather give up tournaments than get vaccinated, but now his people, together with the organizers of the tournaments, are trying to find an interim solution that will allow him to play.

Tommy Haas, who heads the organization of the Indian Wells (the tournament will be March 6-19), said that it would be a "shame" if Nola was not allowed to play in the US due to the lack of vaccination. "In the middle of April it should be over, but I hope we can advance it and allow him to arrive," said the former German tennis player. "He wants to play, so we should give him the opportunity."

As you may remember, Djokovic was expelled from Australia last year because he was not vaccinated and could not play in Melbourne, but last month He was allowed to enter and also won the Australian Championship for the 10th time, en route to his 22nd career Grand Slam title.
