Reigning world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the fastest time on the first day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain on Thursday, ahead of Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin and the two Ferraris and Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

The Mercedes of the British Lewis Hamilton and George Russell end the day with the 6th and 9th best times respectively, times that are anecdotal for the moment on this first day of testing, especially synonymous with running in for the teams.
Testing continues until Saturday, before the first Grand Prix of the season at the same circuit next week.
