Florian Wilmsmann was the first German ski crosser to win a medal at the World Championships.
The 27-year-old took silver in Bakuriani, Georgia, behind surprise world champion Simone Deromedis from Italy.
Third was the Swede Erik Mobärg.
Two years ago, Wilmsmann won the World Championship dress rehearsal in Bakuriani – his first of two World Cup victories.
This winter, however, he has not been on the podium once.
In the semifinals he eliminated Pyeongchang Olympic champion Brady Leman (Canada) and former World Cup bronze medalist Bastien Midol from France.
In the final, Wilmsmann only had to give way to Deromedis, who has not yet won a World Cup.
Olympic third Daniela Maier fails in the semifinals
The highly traded Olympic third Daniela Maier was seventh.
Top favorite Sandra Näslund (Sweden) successfully defended her title in front of Austrian Katrin Ofner and Fanny Smith from Switzerland.
Maier failed in the semi-finals by Näslund and Smith, with whom she had already dueled for the bronze medal in Beijing.
0.11 seconds were missing to enter the final.
In the "small final" she fell shortly after the start.
Alexandra Grauvogl won the only German medal for women in 2007 when she took bronze.
For Johanna Holzmann, the quarterfinals were the last stop.
Niklas Bachsleitner, Daniel Bohnacker and Tim Hronek were eliminated in the round of 16.
After the individual decision, the team competition (11.30 a.m.) is still on the program.
