"A monument", "a star of French football": the world of football pays tribute to Just Fontaine

Former OGC Nice and Stade de Reims striker Just Fontaine has died at the age of 89. With a 65-year-old record, the former France team striker has left an indelible mark on world football.


A star of French football, an outstanding scorer, a star of Reims football.

These are the few simple words used by the Stade de Reims to pay tribute to Just Fontaine.

The former club striker (1956-1962) died on Wednesday March 1, 2023 at the age of 89.

Born in Marrakech in 1933, Just Fontaine discovered football in Morocco before joining OGC Nice in 1953, then the Stade de Reims.

A short but intense career since the striker will win four titles of champions of France.

He reached his peak with the France team: 30 goals in 21 selections.

Including 13 achievements in the 1958 World Cup alone. A record that still stands 65 years later.

After his playing career, Just Fontaine embarked on a managerial career, notably becoming coach of Paris Saint-Germain for three seasons, shortly after the creation of the capital club (1973-1976).

He will also lead the Moroccan selection (1979-1981) before retiring from football.

The capital club also paid tribute to one of its first coaches.
