Formula 1: “I was simply there in the right place at the right time” says Logan Sargeant

The championship has taken on an American accent this year with the arrival of Las Vegas on the calendar, and that of the 22-year-old Williams driver who confided before his debut at the Bahrain GP this weekend.

You are the first American driver to race in F1 since 2015. How does that make you feel?

Logan Sargeant:

Obviously I'm very happy to be able to represent the United States on the grid.

The three Grands Prix contested in the country will be really special for me, there will be my friends and my family.

I will be able to feel a familiar atmosphere for the first time, like at home.

This is what I expect the most, I hope to do my best.

You were born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, less than an hour from Miami where the first American GP of the season will be held on May 7.

This will be a return to basics, isn't it?

This is where I started racing karting a while ago.

It really makes me feel like I'm home and back to where it all started.

So it's going to be something really special.

Obviously it's going to be difficult because I don't know the track and there will be a lot to learn that weekend.

But I will try to do my best.

Do you feel extra pressure?

I don't think there is any additional pressure.

At the start of the season, there is always a lot to learn and you have to adapt.

In the end, if I do my best, the results will come.

My expectations are higher than any outside pressure.

F1 has never been so popular in the United States today.

How do you see things from your American point of view?

F1 is growing fast, that's for sure.

I notice a lot more of my friends are involved in sports and are a lot more interested in it.

It's amazing to see and I hope it will continue (...) and that I will be able to give them reasons to encourage it.

Netflix (with its “Drive to Survive” series, editor’s note) has obviously played an important role in this growing popularity, it is surely one of the main factors.

Liberty Media (the American group that has owned the commercial rights to F1 since 2017, editor's note) is also helping with development.

Also, having three Grands Prix has helped develop the sport in the country.

All of these factors combined made the difference.

Last year, for your first season in Formula 2, the antechamber of F1, you finished in 4th place in the championship and were crowned “rookie of the year”.

Do you think that your nationality still played in favor of your arrival in F1 this season?

I think Williams believes in me otherwise I wouldn't be here.

I also think I had a very good career in Junior, it didn't necessarily hurt me, it was positive.

I was simply there at the right place, at the right time.
