After 6,358 days, Rafael Nadal's streak is over.
Tonight (Friday) after Taylor Fritz's victory at the Acapulco tournament, it was finally guaranteed that the bull from Majorca will remain outside the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time since April 2005. Nadal has remained a total of 912 consecutive weeks in the top ten - an all-time record.
"It's always better to be in the top 10, but sometimes you have to accept things as they are. To be honest, with all the injuries I've had, it's a miracle that I stayed there for so long," Nadal said in response.
"I've been through a lot of challenging injuries recently. A broken rib, two lacerations, ankle problems. After a year like this, it's clear that the body wears out and gets tired."
Felix Oja Eliasim and Hubert Horkac will overtake the Spaniard in the rankings and enter the top ten in the world at his expense, but it is still unclear when Nadal will return to the courts and get the opportunity to return to his natural place.
The current injury he is suffering from is getting more and more complicated and the return date is still not far from certain or clear.
"We look at this injury week by week," says Nadal.
"The damage I did to myself at the Australian Championship was very big, apparently. I have a big tear in a muscle, in a very problematic location. I hope I will be able to return as soon as possible. I don't know if I will return in Monte Carlo, Barcelona or Madrid - but I know I want to return, and it will happen When I'm ready for it."
