ESC: Cautious start, confident finish

The Geretsrieder River Rats won 4:3 on Friday at former feared opponents EV Pegnitz and are back in third place in the Bayernliga relegation round

Pegnitz/Geretsried – The Geretsried ice hockey team brought in half the yield from the targeted six-point weekend on Friday: The River Rats won 4:3 (2:2, 2:1, 0:0 ).

The Pegnitzers, who parted ways with their coach Petr Kukla this week and had to do without their suspended top scorer Roman Navarra, wanted to use their last chance to stay up in the league.

Daniel Sonnenberg made it 1-0 after nine minutes, but Ondrej Horvath equalized 1-1 in the first power play (17').

Shortly thereafter, Pegnitz took the lead again through Eric Schuster (18'), but Daniel Bursch scored almost immediately to make it 2-2 (19').

"After the slow start, we fought our way back into the game," praised Tauber.

Shortly after the beginning of the second period, Bursch again brought his team 3:2 in front, while other good chances remained unused.

Florian Strobl increased to 4:2 in the 31st minute.

"We had the opponent under control," reported the ESC coach, who, however, struggled with Mark Meier's 3: 4 goal: "A stupid goal.

We were badly organized there.”

In the final third, too, the Geretsrieders dominated the game, but didn't take any more risks, instead playing simply and safely.

"The team did well," said Tauber, also pleased that the River Rats were once again able to celebrate a win against the long-standing nemesis: "I never managed to do that as an active player, but I did on my first appearance as a coach here in Pegnitz. "
