Will 100-minute football games become commonplace? The statement of the president of FIFA | Israel Hayom

Gianni Infantino called for accurate calculations of time additions in leagues around the world, this after the IFAB judging committee submitted its conclusions • "In some leagues there are games that last less than 50 minutes"

Soccer matches lasting 100 minutes could become commonplace, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino today (Saturday) calling for more accurate calculations of added time to be applied in leagues around the world.

Infantino's call comes after FIFA's International Refereeing Committee IFAB submitted its conclusions after examining the issue, and determined by a majority of about 80 percent that the added time in matches should be longer.

Fifa's president Gianni Infantino said leagues would be monitored to ensure they were following the laws of the game correctly when it comes to adding on time for goal celebrations, injuries, time-wasting and substitutes.

"We've seen a very inconsistent application of the laws of the game when it comes to time wasting, and in some leagues there are games that last less than 50 minutes, and in others about 60 minutes," Infantino said at a press conference in London.

"We will rely on everyone's good and positive spirit, I don't think there is a need for coercive measures, but rather the implementation of the conclusions. We will follow leagues all over the world. We are not changing the rules of the game."

FIFA chief referee Pierluigi Collina led a concerted effort to reduce time-wasting at last year's World Cup in Qatar, and FIFA now wants the same criteria to be used in competitions around the world from July 1.
