Olympic Games: after criticism, Paris 2024 relaunches the sale of single tickets

2023-03-09T17:22:29.741Z

If 3.25 million tickets have already been sold, 1.5 million will be on sale individually from May 11. And at all costs.

February 15 marked the opening of the ticket office for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (July 26-August 11).

An appointment accompanied by an unprecedented procedure (draw lots, live slots, single platform) which, during the first phase of sales, saw 3.25 million (13% of tickets at €24 and 70% at less than €100) of the 10 million tickets, from buyers from 158 countries.

The x-ray indicates that two-thirds of buyers were from France, tickets for two sports (climbing and freestyle BMX were sold out on day one), 44% of buyers were under 35, that due to the gauges football is the sport with the most sales, ahead of athletics, rugby 7, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, beach volleyball, handball, etc.

But the procedure has drawn criticism from disappointed candidates (by the amounts or the device).

At the time of the first assessment, Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Organizing Committee, heard the grievances and recalled:

“There are two major challenges when preparing a ticketing program: it is a key program for the financing of the Games (96% of the Cojo's budget comes from private income), ticketing accounting for a third of income.

It is a strategic program.

The second challenge is to fill the stadiums, to thrill the spectators and the French.

Some would like it to be more accessible, others consider that, since there are more applicants than offers, why not increase the prices to afford some leeway in the organization of the Games.

There is a balance to be found between the two

How will the second phase of sales be organised?

After the struggles of the first phase of sales, the second is being prepared around a comparable system, with the same constraints (during the first registration for the draw, the automatic registration option for single tickets was offered, if the box was not checked, candidates must re-register): limit of 30 tickets maximum per account (including those already purchased);

6 tickets maximum per session with the exception of 60 sessions (the most requested) limited to 4.

During this phase, 1.5 million single tickets (registration for the draw from March 15 to April 20, sales start on May 11) will be put on sale (including at least 300,000 at €24).

With, on the menu, the prestigious finals and the ceremonies.

A ticket for an archery final will range from €50 to €180;

from €90 to €320 for a handball final;

from €125 to €980 for the men's 100m final in athletics;

from 45 to 2700 € for a ticket to the opening ceremony… Other sales phases will follow.

The sale of tickets for the Paralympic Games (August 28-September 8) will be launched next October.
