An uproar in women's tennis following Anastasia Potapova's decision to appear for a match at Indian Wells wearing a Spartak Moscow soccer team shirt.
The Russian tennis player entered the stadium wearing Spartak's red shirt before the match against Jessica Pegula and although she took it off immediately upon the entrance of her American opponent, she managed to anger many who saw it as defiance, including world number one Iga Shabiontek.
The 21-year-old Pole was asked about this after her victory over Bianca Andrescu and said: "To be honest, I was surprised. I thought she understood that it was not appropriate. Even if she is a fan of the team, this is not the time for that."
Shabiontek has previously spoken out against Russia's invasion and shown support for Ukraine, and to her approach this is Potapova's backing of her country during the war.
"I spoke with the WTA and I understood from them that such cases will not return because they will explain to the players that they cannot promote Russian teams these days," Sheviontek continued.
"It calmed me down a little, but on the other hand, I think it happened because such a message didn't come out sooner. There was a lot of chaos in the dressing rooms at the beginning of the war. It wasn't clear how to approach everything, unpleasant situations were created. I think that if there had been better leadership than at the moment The first, maybe we would have avoided such situations."
By the way, Potapova, who lost in three sets to Pegula, was later asked to explain the presentation of the shirt and claimed that she has been a fan of Spartak since the age of 21 and does not see it as any provocation.
When asked to name one player from the team, she was unable to meet the challenge.
