A royal atmosphere
Nine years that Bayonne had not evolved in the usual setting of the Real Sociedad football club.
Tickets were gone at breakneck speed and the atmosphere promised to be incredible.
Well not missed.
39,500 people filled the stands of the Reale Arena (or Anoeta).
When the two buses arrived, the supporters had already almost lost their voices.
Then – in a stadium where the Basques greatly outnumbered the Béarnais – the atmosphere began to rise.
And the Pena Baiona delivered its usual chills... During the meeting, the Bayonne supporters pushed their team and tried to wake them up.
In vain.
It was even the Pau fans who, thanks to their "Honhada", led their people to victory.
We regret, however, the many whistles against the scorers while
a scorer's respect message was displayed.
In short, we are already looking forward to attending the Top 14 semi-finals which will be played in this same venue.
Victory, not a shot of "Pau"
“It is above all the fruit of a certain amount of work and a certain talent.
Today the players of the Section played with courage and showed all their legitimacy to stay in the Top 14
” declared manager Sébastien Piqueronies at the end of the meeting in a press conference.
And it must be said that the Palois, penultimate before the game, did not start as favorites against the well-established Bayonnais and in the race for the top six.
However, after having achieved an accomplished first half, the Palois were able to turn their backs at the start of the second period to finish stronger and win.
Something they had failed to do at Hameau against La Rochelle during their last meeting.
After a "
plan perfectly executed by extremely determined men
“, as Piqueronies explains, difficult, given the game displayed, to believe that the Paloise Section is today in this place.
We must now confirm at home during the next meeting against Clermont on April 15.
Claw strokes
Bayonne leaves the top six
In this big bend where the many contenders for the top six are fighting, Aviron Bayonnais stalled.
Without gasoline in the engine, Grégory Patat's men were particularly clumsy.
Like a forward from Thomas Ceyte (15th) followed by a ball from Emeriko Buliruarua or a two-against-one forgotten by Héguy with Cassiem, the Basques were without a solution.
The latter precisely, Sireli Maqala or Guillaume Rouet lacked inspiration.
As a symbol, the blue and white club has undoubtedly missed the inevitable.
Maqala decided to feint, served Yarde but the Englishman was returned spectacularly when flattened by Tuimaba (65th).
The Bayonnais experienced their first hitch at home this season this Saturday and virtually came out of the top six.
"
We will look at what went wrong and we will work to get back on track,
” assured flanker Pierre Huguet.
Yarde and Buliruarua in trouble
The English international (13 caps) was only celebrating his second tenure against Pau.
Plagued by extra-sporting affairs across the Channel, the former Sale Sharks winger was in trouble this Saturday.
He obviously misses a ready-made try (65th) but also experienced defensive mistakes.
Yarde started by losing a first ball at the very start of the match (5th) before being locked out a few minutes later.
All in all, it will not have weighed.
His center teammate, the Fijian Emeriko Buliruarua also proved to be in difficulty.
In his defense, a risky chistera punctuated by a forward, his third in the game.
Too bad because the former center or winger of Toulon and La Rochelle showed, at times, good attitudes.
The "
X factors"
” of the Basques failed this Saturday against Pau and could not do anything to avoid a defeat on Spanish soil.
