Blanc, Mourinho, Tuchel... the 10 biggest severance pay in football

2023-04-25T14:06:28.919Z

Football clubs, especially in England, do not hesitate to sign large checks to dismiss their coach. What are the biggest severance payouts?

1 – Antonio Conte (Tottenham), 31 million

€31 million, a record to beat.

In July 2018, Chelsea sacked Antonio Conte, who had been champions of England a year earlier.

But divorces are often shattering with the Italian coach, who left the Blues to a disappointing 5th place in the Premier League.

At the end of the financial year, Chelsea had mentioned "

exceptional items of 26.6 million pounds sterling (31.28 M€) in connection with changes in the staff of the men's team, as well as legal costs associates

”.

Conte's compatriot, Maurizio Sarri, had succeeded him from Naples in stride.

2 – Jose Mourinho (Manchester United), 22.7 million

The king of severance pay is him.

It's hard to know the numbers down to the penny, but it looks like Jose Mourinho has never taken such a big check as he did at Manchester United.

Two and a half years after his arrival, the Portuguese was fired in December 2018. The Red Devils, renowned for their excellent financial health, are not afraid to splurge, whether with players or coaches.

3 – Laurent Blanc (PSG), 22 million

Laurent Blanc took a big check, and he would be rather proud of it.

Arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2013, the current Lyon coach had extended his contract in February 2016, until the summer of 2018. But four months later and a disappointment in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, White took the door.

In exchange ?

A check for €22 million according to

L'Équipe

, which quotes a 1998 world champion: “

When they fired him from PSG, Laurent did not expect it, and even less in the way.

He thought, "They really don't have any respect."

So taking 22 M€ from them, for him, it was like revenge.

4 – Jose Mourinho (Chelsea), 21 million

When José Mourinho settles down at Chelsea, he has just won the 2004 Champions League with Porto.

He bills himself as the “Special One,” and his contract matches that.

He won two titles of champion of England with the Blues (2005 and 2006) but was suddenly dismissed in September 2007. The key, the sum of 21 M €, a record at the time for severance pay in football .

5 – Jose Mourinho (Tottenham), 18 million

Still him, still him.

Tottenham has often been the club in the shadow of the greatest in England, the club of the loser.

What a godsend it was to sign José Mourinho in November 2019, a year after leaving Manchester United.

But here too, the Portuguese is rowing.

For the first time, he leaves a club without a single trophy.

He was fired in April 2021 and left the Spurs in 7th place in the Premier League, but left with a nice €18m jackpot.

6 – Nuno Espirito Santo (Tottenham), 15.8 million

Flops on the bench there have been, but like Nuno Espirito Santo, not many.

The Portuguese, who arrived from Wolverhampton, played 15 matches on the Spurs bench.

He packed up after a correction inflicted by Manchester United (0-3), the 5th defeat in 10 Premier League games.

Tottenham pays him €15.8m and will replace him with Antonio Conte.

Nuno Espirito Santo did not leave a great memory at Tottenham.

7 – Jose Mourinho (Chelsea), 15 million

No, it's not an error.

Twice José Mourinho was fired by Chelsea, and twice he filled his pockets.

In June 2013, he signed a four-year contract with the Blues, where his return delighted the supporters.

But in December 2015, Chelsea advanced to a heartbreaking 15th place in the league.

Reluctantly, the London club parted again with Mourinho, who did not leave without a check for around €15 million.

8 – Fabio Capello (Russia), 15 million

It's not just the clubs that pay dearly for a dismissal.

In 2012, with a view to performing at the 2018 World Cup which it will organize, Russia pulls out all the stops. It puts the grappling hook on Fabio Capello and his rich CV (AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, etc.) .

In the summer of 2015, the balance sheet was deemed insufficient, and the two parties separated.

Capello (76 years old today) is rewarded with a check for fifteen million euros.

He coached in China between 2017 and 2018 before retiring.

Fabio Capello spent three years as Russia coach.

9 – Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea), 15 million

It was an earthquake that hit London in September 2022. Just over a year after lifting the Champions League, Thomas Tuchel was pushed out of Chelsea.

Beyond a disappointing start to the season, far from the standards of his first full season, Tuchel had experienced great tension on the subject of the transfer window with his management.

He is granted 15 M €, almost double what PSG owed him in December 2020.

10 – Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham), 14.5 million

The 2017-18 season is coming to an end, and Mauricio Pochettino extends his lease at Tottenham for five seasons.

A year later, the Argentine coach justified it by lifting Spurs to the Champions League final.

The harder the fall.

In November 2019, the future PSG coach was fired.

His lucrative contract allows him to pocket 14.5 M€.

He will receive a dozen more when Paris will thank him in the summer of 2022.
