Shock in stoppage time: SV Werder Bremen lost the Bundesliga game on Matchday 30 against FC Schalke 04 1-2 (1-0).

The game report of the DeichStube.

Gelsenkirchen – Even before the kick-off it was clear that there would still be a few remaining doubts about

staying up

.

VfB Stuttgart made sure of that by beating Mönchengladbach on Saturday afternoon.

"When we do our jobs, we don't need to calculate.

This is our approach.

Everything else will come or not," said Ole Werner, coach of

SV Werder Bremen

, on the Sky microphone shortly before the start of the away game at

FC Schalke 04

, who are threatened with relegation .

The problem with the matter: Despite an interim lead, his team did not complete the potentially decisive task and lost 1:2 (1:0) with a goal in added time and lost important ground in the table.

Werder Bremen against FC Schalke 04: Marvin Ducksch shoots Werder in the lead

In terms of personnel,

Ole Werner

did not make any changes compared to the previous week.

As expected, Marvin Ducksch,

who was ailing during the week

, reappeared in the starting XI, in defense Niklas Stark again took over the central part of the back three.

The view of the SV Werder Bremen

bench was a bit strange

– because there was

not a single striker there in the absence of Niclas Füllkrug (calf problems) and Eren Dinkci (foot problems) against

FC Schalke 04 .

This fact did not stand in the way of a brisk start for the guests.

Werder Bremen

had their first really good chance

after just six minutes , but a shot by Leonardo Bittencourt from a central position was just blocked.

A little more than ten minutes later, the lead was there - and it was played out really smartly.

Bremen quickly got out of their own half before the ball landed at Mitchell Weiser via Anthony Jung and Maximilian Philipp.

And the 29-year-old played an absolutely world-class pass straight into Marvin Ducksch

's run without looking

, the certainly accomplished (18th).

During the harlequin cheer typical of him, the native of Dortmund came a little too close to the Schalke spectators, so that a couple of filled plastic cups hit the scorer unsightly.

Ultimately without consequences for the celebrating SVW professionals.

Werder Bremen against FC Schalke 04: Werder in the meantime lucky - Tom Krauss only hits the crossbar

Shortly afterwards, however, there was medical treatment because Jens Stage was accidentally hit in the back of the head by his opponent's cleated shoe after a foul while falling.

The consequences were a yellow card with an interruption of several minutes and a head bandage for the Dane.

Shortly thereafter, Schalke also became really dangerous for the first time, although they actually fired more shots on goal in the first half (10:7).

After a cross, Simon Terodde headed hard on

SV Werder Bremen 's goal

, but keeper Jiri Pavlenka was careful (34').

The home team kept trying, but the next really good opportunity came from the more mature Bremen team.

During a counterattack, Stage put Philipp in the limelight with a nice pass, but his hard shot went wide of the goal (45').

In the six-minute stoppage time, Ducksch fired a shot from a promising position under pressure (45+4) before going into the dressing room with the narrow but deserved lead.

After the break,

S04

came back with a long-range shot from Marius Bülter, which Pavlenka deflected over the crossbar (47').

The hosts remained more active afterwards because

Werder Bremen

came out of the break a little too cautiously.

Shortly thereafter, Pavlenka also had to save against Rodrigo Zalazar (58th).

A few moments later, the Czech didn't look so good when he let the ball bounce forward from a corner, but Tom Krauss didn't punish the mistake and instead shot the crossbar (64').

Schalke 04

sniffed the equalizer because Werder hardly knew how to please in terms of play.

On top of that, Stark had to make way for Amos Pieper with a foot injury (67').

It actually lasted until the 74th minute before Bittencourt sent another green-white offensive signal with a flick next to the goal.

But then it was over for the midfielder, together with Maximilian Philipp he was substituted for Ilia Gruev and Niklas Schmidt (76th).

Werder Bremen vs. FC Schalke 04: Sepp van den Berg and Dominick Drexler turn the game late

This didn't really improve the Bremen performance.

And quite rightly it then also put the 1:1.

Again Werder Bremen

defended

far too carelessly, Pieper extended a header right in front of Sepp van den Berg's feet.

Ducksch tried to save in the backcourt, which was once again far too open, but the ball was already on its way and landed untenably in the net (81').

The Werner team looked for a quick answer, but a Ducksch free-kick from a good position rushed just wide (86').

In injury time, Ducksch appeared again dangerously in front of the opposing goal after a Schalke mistake, but Kenan Karaman threw himself in between (90+1).

In return,

Werder became Bremen's

very weak second half then finally punished.

Again, the hosts had too much space, which is why a cross landed precisely at Dominick Drexler, who easily scored victory for FC

Schalke 04

(90 + 2).

The rest was a Schalke celebration, while the disappointment on the Bremen side was great.

"We could have won the game here today if we had been more effective, but the bottom line was that our performance wasn't what we had imagined," admitted

Ole Werner

openly.

"I think

Schalke

got more out of the game overall in both halves."

Werder Bremen's

captain Marco Friedl grumbled: "The second half was extremely bad from us." And the Austrian pushed afterwards: "We knew that Schalke would give everything what they have because they are gambling for their lives.

We completely missed that attitude, especially in the second half, and all in all we deserved to lose.”

Werder Bremen still in the relegation battle after losing to Schalke 04: "We're not through yet"

The

relegation battle

will probably remain an issue for a little longer than everyone involved would like.

After the win against Hertha BSC, many fans had actually expected the rest of the season to be relaxed.

But now the view is a little more on the table.

The gap between Werder Bremen

is seven points

and the relegation place.

Next Saturday, the game will be played late again under floodlights – the opponent will then be FC Bayern Munich in the Wohninvest Weser Stadium (6:30 p.m., DeichStube live ticker).

"We know we're not through yet and we still need points.

We now have a difficult game ahead of us," explained Clemens Fritz, Werder's head of professional football.

"We'll keep working, because we knew beforehand that we weren't done yet.

There are still four intense weeks to come.” (mbü) Have you read it?

8:29 p.m .: The game is over.

Is that bitter?

Werder lost 2-1 to Schalke, Ducksch's lead (18') wasn't enough because Schalke pressed in the second half and van den Berg (81') and Drexler (90'+2') earned a deserved win.

The arena is celebrating, Schalke have more hope than ever this season of staying up.

Werder still has to wait for that.

Maybe next week against Bayern.

The ticker man says goodbye and leaves the field to the reporters.

Until next week!

8:27 p.m.: And that was it.

Schalke beat Werder 2-1...

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Schalke turns the game in added time

90.+2:

Zalazar plays an outstanding pass over the defense into the penalty area.

There Drexler is completely blank – not offside – and lobs the ball past Pavlenka, who is storming out, into the far corner.

90 + 2: Goal for Schalke.

Instead, Drexler meets on the other side, that doesn't exist.

90.+1: ducksch!

Yoshida loses the ball on the baseline, Ducksch plays a one-two with Schmidt and comes into a perfect shooting position from eight yards out, but is blocked, that would have been 2-1!

90 min:

Werder still has to survive five minutes here.

89 min:

Next good attack from Schalke, Weiser just clears the corner.

It then lands behind the gate.

88 min:

Relief for Werder, Ducksch and Groß scurry together an attack on the sixteen, Ducksch dribbles against two men in the sixteen, but cannot get through.

86 min: Ducksch!

The foul on Jung resulted in a free kick, which Ducksch narrowly missed from 20 meters on the left.

Good chance!

85 min:

And on the field it is scorer van den Berg, who has his foot a little too high against Jung and sees yellow.

84 min:

Clemens Fritz sees yellow on the bench.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Schalke's offensive urge is rewarded

82 min:

On the other side, Ducksch is suddenly behind the defensive line with the ball on his foot and pulls away a little hastily.

The ball misses to the right, and the striker would have had room for a one-on-one.

But it would have been offside anyway.

81 min:

A throw-in from the left lands on the sixteen at van den Berg, who has just been substituted on.

He takes off – and hits the bottom left.

Football can be so simple.

Bitter for Werder, but it's deserved.

81 min: There is the overdue equalization.

Van den Berg's 1-1 brings the arena to a boil.

80 min:

It becomes dangerous because the ball bounces off in the crowd and falls freely on the five, but Werder is awake.

80 min:

The tenth corner for Schalke in this game.

78 min:

And the new ones at Schalke deliver the first proof of work: Drexler has a lot of space on the right and crosses to Polter's head, but the header has no power, Pavlenka catches the game device.

76 min:

Yoshida fouls in midfield and sees yellow for it.

Bittencourt hit the free kick over the goal.

It was Bittencourt's last action to be substituted for Schmidt.

Philipp is also off work, Gruev is there for him.

And Schalke is also changing: Matriciani out, van den Berg in.

75 min:

Triple change at Schalke: Terodde, Karaman and Uronen are out, Frey, Polter and Drexler are now in the game.

74 min:

Werder counters.

Bittencourt drives the ball, Ducksch and Philipp indicate running paths and make room so that Bittencourt can shoot from 20 meters – just wide of the left.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Exciting final phase – Schalke presses for the equalizer

73 min:

Karaman with a header from eleven meters, but he has to fall backwards from the goal and does not put any pressure on the ball.

72 min:

The next proper Schalke attack.

Bülter gets the ball in a running duel with Jung and puts it back with his heel, but Zalazar then only gets a throw-in.

70 min:

Werder still has to survive 20 minutes here.

That will be difficult enough, because the green-whites lack relief up front.

68 min:

Schalke keep putting the pressure on and get the next corner kick out.

And Ducksch gets a yellow card for complaining because he doesn't agree with the referee's foul whistle and makes that clear.

67 min:

Stark can't go any further.

He leaves the place that Pieper enters instead.

65 min:

The second corner kick becomes a Bremen counterattack via Füllkrug, who dribbles against three Schalke players and is about to solve the situation just behind the center line, but then it is placed by Krauss.

That gives the yellow card.

Werder complains because referee Dankert whistles off a possible advantage.

64 min: Latte!

Schalke has a corner ball that lands eight meters from the goal at Krauss, who hits the ball on the crossbar!

In dire need, Stark steers the second ball just past the goal with his chest.

63 min:

Stark returns to the pitch, but from the look on his face you can see he's clenching his teeth.

62 min:

Stark sits down on his pants after a sprint with Terodde and grabs his ankle.

He twisted his ankle once in the first half, but it kept going.

Now he's being treated off the field.

60 min:

Stark takes a ball as the last man, but doesn't see that Terodde is behind him.

Both collide, but since the ball probably came from a Schalke player, it's an offside position, says Bastian Dankert.

58 min:

Schalke pushes more and more.

The hosts get stuck in the Werder penalty area, the ball gets to Zalazar, who shoots from a central position of seven or eight meters and Pavlenka saves.

57 min:

Veljkovic takes Bülter off his feet on the sidelines and sees the yellow box for it.

56 min:

A second ball lands on Terodde's head, but he heads wide of the goal from eleven yards.

54 min:

The game is relatively restrained.

Werder plays a lot of long balls at the back, Schalke can't get through.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Werder leads, Schalke is more offensive

51 min:

Bittencourt wins a ball in midfield and plays Ducksch.

He waits until Bittencourt advances to the top and then serves his teammate, but Bittencourt then uses his hands a little too much in the fight for the ball, Bastian Dankert decides on an offensive foul.

49 min:

Next goal approach from Schalke.

Zalazar lifts the ball behind the Werder defense chain, where Karaman has released, but jumps just past the ball on the right pentagon.

47 min:

Bülter shows straight away that he has a decent hoof!

He pulls from easily 30 meters, maybe even more, Pavlenka fists the projectile over the crossbar.

The corner brings nothing.

46 min: The ball rolls again!

7:36 p.m .:

Enough paused, the teams will also have thought.

You return to the square.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Werder takes a narrow lead into the half-time break

7:21 p.m .: Then it’s halftime!

Werder lead just 1-0 thanks to Marvin Ducksch's goal in the 18th minute.

Schalke have a little more of the game, but Werder had the better chances, who could have led even more after the chances from Philipp and Ducksch shortly before the half-time break.

45.+5: And another good chance for the guests!

Bittencourt drives the ball to the right until just before the baseline, lifts his head and then plays a sharp pass in the direction of the penalty spot.

Goalscorer Ducksch comes rushing there, but the ball is not easy to take, the shot goes over the goal on the right.

45 + 3:

No danger for the Schalke goal.

45 + 2:

Corner for Werder.

45 + 1:

Bülter comes from 15 meters to finish in the Werder penalty area, but is blocked.

There's six minutes of night time due to the lengthy break in treatment for Stage's head injury.

45 min: Big chance for Philipp!

Yoshida doesn't get a ball cleared properly, he ball gets to Stage, which goes through to Philipp, who has started.

He stands half-right in front of the goal and decides to take the powerful shot – wide to the right.

44 min:

Zalazar sets his attempt a little too high.

No danger for Pavlenka's goal.

42 min:

The next free kick for Schalke from a good position.

Yoshida and Philipp fight for the ball, Yoshida is on the ground, the Werder striker steps on his foot.

Correct decision, 24 yards from goal.

39 min:

Good opportunity for Schalke!

A corner kick from the right is headed on goal by Yoshida from behind.

Terodde is blank in the six-yard box, but Pavlenka dives out of the box and just palms the ball forward.

37 min:

The game rarely comes out of the middle third of the field at the moment.

34 min: Big chance for Schalke!

Kral puts the ball out on the left onto Urons.

He lifts his head and sees Terodde, who wraps himself around Veljkovic on the cross and heads in on goal.

Pavlenka steers the powerful attempt to the corner.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: A lot of fight at Schalke – Jens Stage with a head bandage

33 min:

The lead is not flattering, but Schalke felt more of the game.

29 min:

The arena screams "Hand!" when Kaminski's ball rushes into the wall, but Bastian Dankert doesn't want to have seen any.

There is a corner kick instead, but it doesn't bring anything.

28 min:

Stage is back and has to change his jersey.

Werder will probably have to defend the free kick without him.

25 min:

Schalke counters via Karaman.

Stage runs into Schalke's heels from behind, there is a free kick from a central position, 23 meters from the goal.

That gives a yellow card for Stage, who gets a stud from Karaman on the back of his head when he falls and probably has a laceration.

He is being treated by the team doctors.

24 min:

Werder Bremen gets it defended with combined forces.

23 min:

Stark goes a little too impetuously into a duel with Karaman at the edge of the sixteen in the right half-field.

There is a free kick for Schalke.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Marvin Ducksch scores for the Werder lead after a dream attack!

21 min:

A great ball from Bittencourt in front of the goal, which lifts the ball into Weiser's run.

It was then blocked, but the ball landed with Jung - with the well-known result.

18 min: Werder counters via Jung.

He alludes to Philipp at the top, who turns and sees Weiser next to him – and Weiser has an even better eye for Ducksch to his right.

He puts the ball behind the defense to the striker coming in on the right, who remains ice cold in front of Schwolow and puts the ball into the goal from 13 meters on the left.

Great attack, great goal!

18 min: GOOOOOOR for Werder!

Ducksch with the 1:0!

15 min:

Next finish Schalke.

Bülter drives the ball in midfield and tries a low shot from a good 25 meters to the short corner.

Pavlenka has no problems.

12 min:

The corner ball only brings in a throw-in for Werder, which then becomes a boomerang.

Karaman is sent to the right and goes into a running duel against Friedl.

Schalke is all alone in the field and tries it from 18 meters and an unfavorable angle, the ball just misses the far post.

12 min:

First corner kick for Werder.

10 min:

We've had less intense early stages in games this season.

Both teams are looking for a way forward, quickly put the opponent under pressure and have already had good approaches to the goal.

8 min:

Schalke also registers in the penalty area on the other side.

First, Pavlenka has to defuse a ball that Bülter pulled sharply in front of the goal.

The second wave rolls over to the right, Zalazar brings the ball to the five, but Terodde can't press the header.

6. Min:

Huge chance for Werder!

Ducksch and Stage play one-two.

Stage benefits from a slip by Yoshida, moves into the penalty area and lays it in the backcourt.

The completely blank Bittencourt is still blocked when he finishes from 14 meters.

4. Min:

Now Werder's first good attack, but a nice relay pass via Jung, Stage and Ducksch is completed in the penalty area.

3. Min

: Terodde is sent to the right and somehow puts the ball high on the sixteen with his long leg, but Bülter, pressed by Stark, misses there.

2. Min:

Schalke's first good move, Krauss has a lot of space on the right side of the attack, but dribbles the ball sideways.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: The game at Schalke is on!

1 min:

Werder are playing in salmon-colored jerseys again and have their fans behind them.

The latter also applies to Schalke, although, unsurprisingly, the hosts play in royal blue.

1. Min: Bastian Dankert whistles the game, the ball rolls on Schalke!

6:29 p.m .:

Captains Simon Terodde and Marco Friedl are ready to choose sides.

6:27 p.m.:

... and here they come!

6:20 p.m .:

We look again at the current condition of both teams.

Of the last four games Schalke only won against Hertha (5:2), the other three lost the Knappen.

Before that, however, Schalke went eight games without defeat - but with only two wins.

Werder ended a seven-game winless streak with a 4-2 away win over Hertha.

6:13 p.m .:

Great atmosphere already at Schalke.

60,000, minus more than 7,000 Bremen residents, are singing the Steigerleid.

Yes, Schalke are deep in the relegation battle, but it's definitely not due to fan support.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against FC Schalke 04: Ole Werner expects “a big task”

17.17 Uhr:Das ging schnell: Die Bremer Aufstellung ist bereits da: Pavlenka – Veljkovic, Stark, Friedl – Weiser, Groß, Jung – Bittencourt, Stage – Ducksch, Philipp.

But not

at

Werder Bremen .

The many question marks make

it difficult for

Ole Werner .

Who could just storm if the filling krug, Ducksch and Dinkci should actually fail?

Then only Maximilian Philipp would be available as a real attacker.

Werner already has "ideas in mind", but does not want to reveal them, but promises that Werder will attack Schalke

even without a filling jug and the like

.

Finally, the next exclamation mark should be set.
