The 26-year-old son of the head of an Italian crime family was shot dead over the weekend during Napoli's championship celebrations. The team won the Italian league title for the first time in 33 years, and on Thursday began the big celebrations in the city, which has waited for the title for decades and is known for its fanatical love for the game and the team.

During the festivities there were quite a few injuries and violent incidents, but during them Vincenzo Costanzo, who was known to the police and had a "significant" criminal record, was also killed. It is believed that this was a settling of accounts between the local mafia, when Costanzo was shot during a spontaneous street party that took place around the city after Napoli were crowned champions.

He was the son of Maurizio Costenzo, described by police investigators as "a leading member of the Neapolitan Mafia in Ponticelli", where there is an ongoing conflict between criminal organizations. Three other people were injured during the incident. According to police, Costanzo died at the hospital as a result of gunshot wounds.

Prosecutors and Carabinieri police in Naples are investigating whether he was deliberately killed by a rival family, or if the shots were accidental. In many cities in southern Italy, it is not uncommon for people to celebrate with shots fired in the air. Over the weekend, explosions were heard from all sides throughout the city, with fireworks, detonators and gunshots. However, it is believed that this was not accidental.

Naples Mayor Gattaño Manfredi said that "this death is connected to a dynamic that has nothing to do with the celebrations... It must have been someone who took advantage of the party to settle an account." Napoli commissioner Claudio Palomba also said: "The death of the man associated with the championship celebrations has nothing to do with the fans' party. This is a man with a criminal record, it is believed that this is closing accounts."

More than 20 people were taken to the hospital, including people with injuries to the hand and arms caused by fireworks, knife wounds and numerous brawl injuries. A <>-year-old woman was in critical condition after being hit by a car during celebrations in Fratmaggiore, Naples. Three policemen were also lightly wounded.

Authorities have deployed thousands of police officers to the streets. Even the U.S. consulate issued a security alert, saying "spontaneous celebrations can last for several days" and warning of "heavy traffic or road closures, significant use of fireworks and alcohol consumption throughout the city." Cars and scooters have also been banned by the authorities in hopes of minimizing the risk to public order.
