Sepp Maier dismantles Brazzo transfers: FC Bayern "fell for it again"

2023-05-08T09:21:43.878Z

Highlights: Bayern Munich legend Sepp Maier rages against the transfers at FC Bayern. The club legend is particularly annoyed by the signings of Leroy Sané and Sadio Mané. "Do you really think that Pep Guardiola will sell a super player for 50 million euros? Or that Jürgen Klopp lets a great player go?" asked the 79-year-old. Maier was also critical of the supposedly lost "mia san mia" at FCBayern. "I don't know if'mia San mia' is still up to date," said the 706-time FCB goalkeeper.

Munich – Before the season, Hasan Salihamidzic was celebrated from all sides for his transfers at FC Bayern Munich. The signing of world star Sadio Mané, for example, was considered a coup. Only a few months later, the overall impression is quite different. The criticism of the Bayern transfers of recent years is getting louder, club icon Sepp Maier makes a devastating verdict.

Sepp Maier wonders about Bayern transfers of Sané and Mané

"What kind of squad do they have together?" rumbled Sepp Maier in the kicker. "With Sadio Mané, it was a great deal. Sané said: a great deal. But do you really think that Pep Guardiola will sell a super player for 50 million euros? Or that Jürgen Klopp lets a great player go?" asked the long-time Bayern goalkeeper to give the answer himself.

"No, they don't let a great player go. Bavaria wasn't smart about it again, fell for it again. They brought in players who were no longer needed elsewhere," said the 79-year-old, dismantling the Bayern transfers. Sadio Mané moved from Liverpool to Munich last summer for a transfer fee of 32 million euros plus up to nine million bonuses and was supposed to compensate for the departure of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona. Leroy Sané arrived from Manchester City back in 2020 for €49 million.

Sepp Maier dismantles Bayern transfers: "Fell for it again"

What Sepp Maier thinks: Sané has never been able to meet expectations in Munich since his move. 73 points in 130 competitive games for FC Bayern is a good figure, but not outstanding. In Bremen, the Germany international scored to make it 2-0, but only came off the bench recently. Even under Guardiola at Manchester City, Sané was not an undisputed regular.

The signing of Mané was initially praised as a "statement transfer" (Salihamidzic), but soon turned out to be a "show transfer". The now 31-year-old Senegalese attracted negative attention with his punch against Sané and things are not going well on the pitch either. In 36 competitive games for FC Bayern, Mané scored only twelve goals (five assists), the only goal this year came on 22 April in a 1-3 defeat at Mainz. At the moment, Mané seems to be isolated from the team.

Sepp Maier misses the "mia san mia" at FC Bayern

Maier was also critical of the supposedly lost "mia san mia" at FC Bayern: "I don't know if 'mia san mia' is still up to date. It used to be different. It has to do with identification, loyalty and humility towards the club. And also with a certain amount of self-confidence," explained the 706-time FCB goalkeeper.

In addition to Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer, "maybe Joshua Kimmich could say it" from the current squad, Maier said, because "I also have to stand by these words". Already after the scandal over the interview of national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Maier buttoned up the Bayern bosses. (ck)
