Goalkeeping legend Sepp Maier disagrees with the critical voices about Oliver Kahn, saying that the FC Bayern CEO should be given even more time in his office.
Munich – What's next for FC Bayern after a disappointing season? As several media reports from recent weeks indicate, there are signs of a change of power at the record champions. CEO and player legend Oliver Kahn is said to be a little more criticized than sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. Now world champion and goalkeeping legend Sepp Maier commented on the debate about Kahn's future.

FC Bayern record player Sepp Maier criticises Brazzo's supposed top transfers
Maier not only won the three-time European Cup and four-time German championship with FC Bayern, but is still Munich's record player with 706 appearances. The 79-year-old, who worked as a goalkeeper coach at his favourite club in the 1986/87 season and between 1994 and 2008, was extremely critical in an interview with Kicker. However, against Salihamidzic.
As Maier said between the lines, he had made mistakes, especially in the composition of the team. "What kind of squad do they have together? For Mané, it was a great deal. Sané said: a great deal. But do you really think that Pep Guardiola will sell a super player for 50 million euros? Or that Jürgen Klopp is letting a great player go?" asked the 95-time national goalkeeper. The Bavarians were "once again not smart" and had brought in "players who were no longer needed elsewhere," Maier complained.
Sepp Maier believes in Oliver Kahn: "He will do it with ambition and understanding"
The massive criticism of the CEO cannot be explained by the "cat of Anzing". "Before you attack the Olli, you should first look elsewhere. I talk to him often. It's new structures for him," Maier defended his former protégé. "Over 40 years, Uli Hoeneß has built FC Bayern into a world-class global club. Maintaining this level is difficult and takes a lot of energy."
Kahn could not accomplish in "one or two years" what Hoeneß has accomplished in 40 years as a Bayern maker, according to the native of Lower Bavaria. Maier therefore demanded that the CEO be "left to work in peace for the time being" and given him time. "It's a whole new, different area for him now. But he will do it with the same ambition as before and with brains," he is sure.

Sepp Maier sees few alternatives for Kahn's successor: "I don't see anyone – except Uli"
Maier also clearly addresses the lack of alternatives for Kahn's position: "Who else is going to do it? Who is qualified for this? I don't see anyone – unless Uli does it himself again." Hoeneß, who has only been a member of the supervisory board and honorary president since the end of 2019, is therefore the only serious option for Maier's successor.

Recently, there had been rumours of a return of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to the top post, and President Herbert Hainer was also linked to the role of interim chairman of the board. The next regular meeting of the Bayern Supervisory Board will take place on 30 May. The deadline could set the course for the future – possibly with tough personnel decisions in top positions. (ajr)
