The regional semifinals of the NBA playoffs continue to provide action and drama. Tonight (Tuesday through Wednesday) there were two decisive games in both conferences: Philadelphia took a big step toward the Eastern Conference finals after winning in Boston, and at this time Denver and Phoenix face off in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Joel Embiid, James Harden and Doc Rivers have honestly earned the loser label over the years, but maybe this is the game that will change their perspective and destiny. In the Sixers' last 5 games of the playoffs at 2-2 in the series, they were defeated by 35 points or more, but tonight they came to send a message — and came away with a big win that, at least according to Vegas bookmakers, now makes them the top contenders to go all the way and win the championship.

Even if it still seems far away, the Eastern Conference Finals, from which Philadelphia has been absent since 2001, certainly look close. History says that nearly 85% of teams that have won Game 5 2-2 in a playoff series in the past have advanced to the next level. To miss that, something extraordinary has to happen to the Sixers, but the burden of proof is still on them.

From the first minute of the game, there was no doubt which of the teams came sharper, more determined and more focused. Embiid provided an MVP display and dominated the paint on both sides of the court, Harden was mostly busy managing the game and Tyrese Maxey warmed up the handle and made important momentum threes, while on the other end Jayson Tatum missed his first 6 shots from the field and far from his peak, allowing Philly to go into the break with a 9-point advantage. The Celtics were hoping for a completely different start in the second half, and Tatum and Jaylen Brown did look a little better, but Philly's show of dominance continued, and the advantage only grew. When the margin reached 21 in the final quarter, Boston fans responded with loud boos to the players and some even left the arena. The Celtics still tried to come back and shrank to 11, but the Sixers' 2-10 run finally decided the game.

Embiid recorded a third consecutive game with 30 or more points in the playoffs, finishing with 33 to go along with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks. Tyrese Maxey chipped in with 30 (including 6 threes) and 7 rebounds, and James Harden provided an efficient and quiet game with 17 points (4-of-8 from the field, 8-of-10 from the penalty), 10 assists (compared to just two turnovers) and 8 rebounds. Tobias Harris also reached a double-double with 16 and 11 rebounds, in a game in which Philly shot excellent percentages (50% from the field, 40% from three, 85% from the penalty) and dominated unchallenged under the baskets (49 rebounds to the Celtics' 36).

Boston was led by Jayson Tatum with 36 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, in less impressive percentages (11-of-27 from the field, 3-of-11 from three). Jaylen Brown finished with 24 points and 6 rebounds and Marcus Smart contributed 14 and 4 assists, but the Celtics suffered a disadvantage under the basket, mainly due to the poor performance of Al Horford, who finished scoreless, and 0-of-7 from the field. After Milwaukee's elimination and with Golden State also one loss away, another team marked as a top championship contender appears to be on the way out. In Game 6 in two days in Philadelphia, she'll try to turn the bowl upside down.
