Tampere – In the first game of the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland (Tampere) and Latvia (Riga), the DEB team under national coach Harold Kreis will meet Sweden on May 12 at 19:20 German time. With a botched 3-6 dress rehearsal against the USA in their luggage, the 27-man German team wants to attack again at the start of the tournament. It will be a real challenge against the Swedish team.

The "Tre Kronors" already have eleven world championship titles to their name, and another could follow this year. However, the absence of a number of NHL stars in the Scandinavian team speaks against this. "Maybe we can benefit a bit from this," concluded German NHL star Moritz Seider. Plagued by injuries, Seider agreed shortly before the World Cup.

Germany at the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championships: Who are the opponents?

The annual World Cup will be back in Finland after 2022. The Finns were crowned world champions last year and share Group A with Germany at this World Cup. In addition to Finland, the USA is another top-class team at the start. Other opponents are Denmark, France, Austria and Hungary. And, of course, Sweden as the first opponent of the German national team on May 12th.

The start of the tournament could be a bumpy affair for the DEB team. Coach Kreis had to cope with 15 cancellations due to injury in advance. And in the team's defeat against the USA in Munich, weaknesses in scoring were revealed; only two of the top ten German goal scorers of the past DEL season are in this year's squad. However, the association's goals for the World Cup from May 12 to May 28 are clear: "To reach the quarter-finals and direct qualification for the Olympics. Internally, we have said with the team that we want maximum success – no matter what it looks like," coach Harold Kreis told dpa.
