Reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) took pole position on Saturday for the France Grand Prix, the fifth round of the MotoGP season. The championship leader once again made the superiority of his Desmosedici speak for itself by beating in extremis by 58 thousandths the Spanish returnee Marc Marquez (Honda) on his last lap, while the Italian Luca Marini (Ducati-VR46), who had to go through the repechages (Q1), created the surprise by achieving the third time.

Bagnaia will therefore start in first position on Saturday afternoon during the sprint and Sunday during the Grand Prix and could thus fly to the world championship at the end of the weekend at Le Mans. Australian Jack Miller (KTM) took fourth place and will start on the second row ahead of Spaniards Jorge Martin (Ducati-Pramac) and Maverick Vinales (Aprilia). The latter, in the lead at the end of the first run, had a mechanical problem coming out of the pits and could not start again to try to improve his time. Italian Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati-VR46) finished seventh, ahead of Spaniard Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and Frenchman Johann Zarco (Ducati-Pramac).

The fourth row will be occupied by South African Brad Binder (KTM) and Spaniard Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia), who scared himself by falling to more than 200 km/h, and Augusto Fernandez (GasGas Tech 3). Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, already disappointing on Friday riding his Yamaha, will start only in 13th position on Saturday in the sprint and Sunday in the France Grand Prix, the fifth round of the MotoGP season.

«

El Diablo", who had started Q1 very well, finally failed to finish third behind Italian Luca Marini (Ducati-VR46) and surprising Spanish rookie Augusto Fernandez (GasGas Tech 3) for only 23 thousandths, and he will therefore not participate in Q2 where 12 drivers will fight for pole position. "Obviously it's not the result we were hoping for here at Le Mans, for my home Grand Prix. We have to analyze what happened and we will do the best we can. Of course, we know that it will be very difficult starting so far on the grid but that's the way it is, we will have to make sure we get the best out of the bike," said the Niçois.

Already relegated to 16th place in Jerez two weeks ago, the 2021 world champion, who improved his best time of the day before by more than three tenths, achieved a new underperformance to the chagrin of thousands of French fans present at the Bugatti circuit. Quartararo will therefore start only on the fifth row on a track where he won pole position in 2020.
