The 20-year-old skier, who led for most of the championships, finished second on the podium: "It was one of the toughest competitions to date, with crazy wind conditions." • Tibi in 5th place, Spichkov 10

Sharon Kantor, 20, from the Emek Hefer trawler sailing club, won the silver medal at the European Windsurfing Championships on Sunday in the IQ Foyle model. Cantor led for most of the championships, earned her direct ticket to the final and essentially secured herself a medal yesterday. In the final, she competed with Emma Wilson, the experienced British skier, the bronze medalist from the Tokyo Olympic Games and Mina Mobek, the young Nervag.

Even today there were strong winds in Greece, with gusts of over 40 knots (75 km/h), which threatened to cancel the day of finals, but in the afternoon the wind calmed down a bit and the signal was given to go out to sea. The start of the final was tight, with Cantor leading by a slight margin and increasing it considerably in the first buoy.

The Briton did not let up and continued to endanger her and even narrow the gap and both looked on the safe path to first and second place, but the Nervae did not give up. Mobeck surprised them both by choosing a different line and taking the lead at half-time. Cantor and the Briton continued to fight for second place, but in the final stretch the Briton fell and Cantor crossed the finish line seconds behind Mobeck and secured the silver medal.

At the same time, Kantor also won the silver medal in the under-21 category, while Tamar Steinberg, the youngest Israeli competitor, won bronze in this category.

"It was one of the toughest competitions to date, with crazy wind conditions," said a breathless Cantor, draped in an Israeli flag at the finish line. "Today I took a huge step on my way to Paris, but there is still a long way to go. Right now I'm happy that I was able to bring honor to the country, the sailing association and my club at Michmoret."

Kantor wasn't the only Israeli to qualify for the medal rounds. Earlier today, the quarterfinals got underway with Kati Spychkov off to a weak start at the starting line, forcing her to chase the lead. The conditions on the water were difficult for the competitors, with the waves causing a variety of falls, but in the end Katy was unable to catch up and finished in tenth place.

Shahar Tibi, who finished the qualifying round in second place, won a direct ticket to the semifinals, and out of four competitors only the top two will join Sharon Kantor, who is waiting in the final. In a 30-knot spirit, Tibi came out third from the starting line and began chasing Britain's Emma Wilson. In the final buoy before the finish, Tibi fell and finished the competition in fifth place overall.

The women's team, led by coach Shahar Zubari and assistant coach Stav Beimel, could mark another excellent competition, with three skiers reaching the medal rounds, more than any other country that participated in the competition. "We prove to ourselves time and time again that we have the ability and talent to conquer the podium at the highest levels in surfing," Shahar Zubari said after the medals were awarded. "Now we are embarking on a year-long journey to get the Quetta to Paris and elect our representative there to bring our capabilities to the peak on the world's biggest stage."

Shai Buber, Chairman of the Sailing Association: "Another good competition for women. I wish that in every competition we would bring a medal. We knew that in this format anything was possible in the medal rounds, so it was important to win the qualifying series and Sharon did it in a big way. We will continue to improve and work hard before the pre-Olympic tournament in July and hopefully we will put a representative on the podium there as well."
