Anastasia Gorbenko won the gold medal on Wednesday evening, setting an amazing new Israeli record in the 200-meter mixed individual medley in the second competition of the prestigious Mara Nostrum round held in Barcelona, with the participation of Israeli swimmers.
Gorbenko set a time of 2:09.47, more than half a second off her previous record of 2:09.99, set in Hungary in May 2021. In qualifying, Gorbenko swam with a time of 2:13.40, which was the sixth-best and managed to advance to the final. Leah Polonsky finished ninth in qualifying (2:16.16) and advanced to the B final, where she finished first with 2:15.61.
Gorbenko also swam in the final of the women's 100-meter breaststroke, finishing sixth with a time of 1:07.28. Polonsky also swam in qualifying (1:11.68) but did not qualify for the final swim. Last Sunday, in the first competition held in France, Gorbenko won first place in the 100-meter backstroke.
Gorbenko said: "It's great fun to be back competing, I'm happy to break my personal record and the Israeli record after two years. After my professional decision together with coach Tom Rushton, from the beginning of 2023 we have focused more on training and less on competitions, and I feel that the hard work I have done over the past few months is paying off."
