Home-field advantage is a minor detail when meeting the 2022-23 Miami Heat. Just as they did in the first round and Eastern Conference semifinals in the current playoffs, the Florida team lined up Wednesday night for an away game to open the regional series against the Boston Celtics — and took a 0-1 lead on their opponent's court with a 116-123 victory at TD Garden led by Jimmy Butler, who if not him.

The advantage swung from side to side for most of the first half until a 2-15 run allowed Boston to open a double-digit gap, but a 46-point third quarter by the Heat — a franchise record — turned things around. Jayson Tatum didn't even pick up a shot in the final quarter, where he lost two consecutive shots on a foul in the decisive minutes, and the third Eastern Conference Finals series in four seasons between these two teams opened with a victory for the eighth-ranked team.

Butler scored 23 of 35 points in the second half and added seven assists, six steals and five rebounds. Bam Adebayo recorded 20 points and eight rebounds, and four other Miami players contributed 15 points each: Gabe Vincent, Max Strus, Caleb Martin and Kyle Lowry.

Tatum stood out for the Celtics with 30 and seven rebounds, Jaylen Brown provided 22 and nine, respectively, Malcolm Brogdon scored 19 points and Robert Williams 14, along with seven rebounds.
