Erdinger Sportgala: Jürgen Klopp congratulates from Liverpool

2023-05-18T15:40:02.141Z

Highlights: The Erding Sports Gala celebrates the sport in its entirety like no other. The Altenerding Middle School was voted Team of the Year in the athletes' election. FC Hörgersdorf received the honorary award of the editors, and the laudator was Liverpool's coach Jürgen Klopp. The winners of our athletes' choice have been announced: Simon Zachenhuber is back in first place. Mona Mayer is Sportswoman of the year for the first time.

The winners of our athletes' choice have been announced: Simon Zachenhuber is back in first place. Mona Mayer is Sportswoman of the Year for the first time. The big surprise will be provided by the Altenerdingen athletics students - and the laudator for the editorial team's honorary award.

Erding – Disbelief, skepticism, then first understanding and finally a broad grin, joy, pride: The basic essence of the Erding Sports Gala, to which the district and the local newspaper have invited to the town hall, could be seen in the facial expression of the team, which took first place in the vote of the readers of our newspaper. Not a league team spoiled by success, but the athletics boys of the Altenerding Middle School were voted Team of the Year in the athletes' election. And another team, FC Hörgersdorf, could hardly believe what was happening: Because the football A-classist received the honorary award of the editors, and the laudator was Liverpool's coach Jürgen Klopp. But more on that later.

It was only the second edition of the joint sports gala of the Erding district and the Erdinger/Dorfener Anzeiger - and it was already called a firm tradition several times in the course of the evening. In keeping with its DNA, the event celebrates the sport in its entirety like no other. On the one hand, honors of globally successful top athletes from the district are on the program. On the other hand, a prize will be awarded that is not exclusively based on athletic performance, but also reflects the sympathy values of the audience and thus also puts other athletes in the spotlight: the choice of athletes by the readers of our newspaper.

"For us, this is a historic event," said Florian Felkel, sports teacher of the Altenerdingen athletics students. The fact that the middle school, which has just 250 pupils, and its amateur team ("We don't have a single club athlete") overtake greats like FC Schwaig in the readers' rating is "simply overwhelming". Felkel's fellow coach and sports teacher legend Dieter Schneider put it in a nutshell: "It's great that school sports are perceived, and especially that middle school students, of all people, are at the top."

Sport as a connecting element, as a field that offers opportunities to everyone. Hans Moritz, editor-in-chief of the Erdinger/Dorfener Anzeiger, said in his welcoming address: "No other social actor is so strong and successful in bringing people together regardless of their origin, age and economic situation and turning them into top performers who grow beyond themselves." Especially with regard to the integration of refugees, society and politics could take an example from sport.

District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer emphasized how important the promotion of popular sports is and proudly declared that the district is "extraordinarily strong" committed to sport, among other things, with trainer subsidies amounting to 70,000 euros per year. He recalled that in the past, there was nothing on offer in the countryside except football and shooting, while today pretty much everything can be found, right down to the "exotic department".

Although the honors were not directly exotic, the range of honorees is still remarkable. From table tennis and skiing to boxing, rowing and swimming to football and triathlon, everything was there. In short clips, sports director and main organizer Dieter Priglmeir showed an outline of their recent sporting successes.

Simon Zachenhuber has a subscription to the victory. The professional boxer from Reisen won the title of "Sportsman of the Year" for the second time in a row. The reigning junior middleweight world champion, who has achieved wide fame not least through his participation in the TV show "Let's Dance", had come from Stuttgart with his trainer Conny Mittermeier especially for the one evening. With editor Wolfgang Krzizok, who moderated the evening, he chatted in a relaxed manner and did not show any posturing – a popular figure.

In the case of second-placed Olli Zeidler, readers not only honored his outstanding successes in rowing, which earned him the world champion title in the single sculls in the Czech Republic in 2022. The 26-year-old also credited his courageous, critical words towards the rowing association. That, too, is sportsmanship.

There is still a lot to be expected from Luis Hofmaier, who was voted third again as in the previous year - and who has been the "Holzland shark" since this gala. He could live with that, said the swimmer from Steinkirchen dryly. The 13-year-old trains in the Olympic swimming pool before school. His alarm clock rings at 4:30 a.m., tickling Krzizok out of the young talent's nose.

Among the individual athletes, a new name is at the top of the list: 400-meter runner Mona Mayer. The Hörlkofen native talked on stage about her experience in the relay at the European Championships in Munich ("I don't hear anything during the run and don't even notice what's around me anymore") and the great time at the athletes' camp in Erding ("There was a great atmosphere").

Behind her in second place was the second Zachenhuber in the list of top athletes: swimmer Amelie Zachenhuber, who had previously been in first place eight times in a row. The 18-year-old from Reisen confessed that she was not yet back to 100 percent athletic after her epilepsy disease. In third place among the individual athletes, readers chose Anna Herbst as another swimmer. Father Franz accepted the trophy on her behalf.

The evening was musical when the teams were honored. Behind the Altenerdinger track and field athletes landed the soccer women of FC Langengeisling. Krzizok chatted with them about the team's most popular dressing room songs. And the third team in the group, the footballers from FC Schwaig, even picked up the microphone themselves to congratulate their player Tobi Bartl on his birthday. "Happy Birthday" the whole hall sang.

As a sign of respect, the editorial team has awarded a special prize this year. The footballers of FC Hörgersdorf have made football history with a legendary match against Türkgücü Erding after the appearance of a drunk and the cancellation of the game - but to their chagrin and subsequently with relegation. "These are stories that life and football writes," none other than Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp consoled the Hörgersdorfers from the video screen. Neither the special prize nor warm words undo the "hard thing", according to captain Klaus Reger. But maybe a little easier to endure and look ahead. Because that's also the sport: cheering, sympathy and patting on the back when things don't go so well.
