Tampere – Germany can finally reward itself at the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland and Latvia. On Thursday (18 May), coach Harold Kreis's DEB team beat Denmark 6-4. Before that, there were three defeats, some of them very unfortunate, against the top teams Sweden, Finland and USA. Despite the three defeats and especially with yesterday's victory behind them, everything is still possible for Germany. The next three-pointer is to be achieved against Austria.

Germany can't rely on NHL pro Leon Draisaitl at the Ice Hockey World Cup
NHL star Leon Draisaitl, however, will not support Germany at the Ice Hockey World Cup. Despite the Edmonton Oilers' elimination in the playoffs for the coveted Stanley Cup, the top forward is not traveling to Finland.
The DEB announced the decision on Wednesday. Sporting director Christian Künast, who was in contact with Draisaitl, explained the decision. According to Künast, it is "not possible to realize his participation in the World Cup in the short time available." Nevertheless, Germany has been able to keep up in all group games so far, despite the failures at almost all levels. Only the exploitation of opportunities was inadequate.

But even without their superstar Draisaitl, Germany still has every opportunity at the Ice Hockey World Championships. In the table, Kreis's squad is sixth out of eight with three points after four games. Opponents Austria are bottom of the group with only one point.
