Home blessing: Maccabi Haifa will set the best home record in league history? - Voila! sport

2023-05-20T11:18:53.405Z

Highlights: Maccabi Haifa has one more goal before it closes the 2022/23 season: setting the best home record in the history of Israel's top league. The Green Club currently stands at 49 points in home games this season, so a victory in the final round over the black sheep Hapoel Jerusalem would make them the new record holder. In all three of Becher's seasons combined, the Greens have three home losses in the league. Only Benny Reina, who drew 0-0 at the end of January, denied the Greens a perfect home record. In total, out of the 159 points it could have accumulated as hosts over the past three years, MaccabiHaifa scored 138. A monstrous 86.7 percent success rate at home, which could cross the 87 percent mark with a win tonight.

Between the spontaneous celebrations after the Maccabi Netanya quintet and the coronation ceremony tonight (Saturday), the farewell to Barak Behar and the official championship celebrations tomorrow, Maccabi Haifa has one more goal before it closes the 2022/23 season: setting the best home record in the history of Israel's top league.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva accumulated 50 home points (out of a possible 54 in 2016/17) on the way to the second championship in the Behar era and had a 92.5% success rate, with the ancient league record belonging to Hapoel Petah Tikva in 1957/58, when it finished as runners-up, but recorded as hosts 10 wins and a draw representing a 93.9% success rate.

Maccabi Haifa currently stands at 49 points in home games this season, so a victory in the final round over the black sheep Hapoel Jerusalem (the only one to which the champions lost twice this season) would make them the new record holder with 52 points out of a possible 54 and a 96.2% success rate. Will you meet the last challenge?

Since Behar's arrival, Maccabi Haifa has turned the municipal stadium into a real fortress. The group and the crowd came together for an almost invincible force. In 2019/20, before the Behar era and in the season in which it was runners-up, Maccabi Haifa lost four times on its field (compared to only three away losses). In all three of Becher's seasons combined, the Greens have three home losses in the league.

In the first championship Maccabi Haifa accumulated 45 home points and lost once, along with three draws (goal difference 12:39), in the second championship it achieved 44 points, with two losses and two draws (goal difference 12:43) and in the third championship it is currently undefeated. Only Benny Reina, who drew 0-0 at the end of January, denied the Greens a perfect home record. 16 wins, a single draw and the same goal difference as last season (12:43).

In total, out of the 159 points it could have accumulated as hosts over the past three years, Maccabi Haifa scored 138. A monstrous 86.7 percent success rate at home, which could cross the 87 percent mark with a win tonight.

Looking historically, Maccabi Haifa 2022/23 could become the 30th team in the history of the top division to finish a season without a home defeat, and the fourth in the history of the Green Club. It had happened before as runners-up in 1985/86, with nine home wins and six draws en route to losing the title after the first two championships; Championship in 1988–89 with nine wins and seven draws (a season of 31 matches, including 16 home games); And of course in the famous unbeaten season in 1993/94, when the home record was 16 wins and four draws.

Then, on the way to the championship without defeat, Maccabi Haifa scored 52 points out of a possible 60 at home, representing an 86.66 success rate. This figure was improved in 2009/10 with a club record of 87 percent, but then there was one loss in a game of the season against Hapoel Tel Aviv that together with the offset also caused the loss of the championship.

Therefore, even if it loses to Hapoel Jerusalem, Maccabi Haifa will remain on over 90 percent success rate at home. A new club record has already been set. The goal is the league's record.

It's not like everything went smoothly in home games this season. On the contrary, Maccabi Haifa suffered quite a bit. This is where the element of the crowd and the electrifying atmosphere comes in, which the cast and crew have talked about time and time again this week.

We recently mentioned that Maccabi Haifa is one of the comeback queens in Europe. Of the seven turnovers she made in the league, six were at home. It started in the opening game of the season, when immediately after qualifying for the Champions League the Greens fell behind against Maccabi Netanya, but Omer Atzili equalized in extra time of the first half and in the last 12 minutes completed a goal and cooked for Charon Sherry on the way to 1-4.

It was the Greens' slowest turnaround: a tie in the 45+5th minute and a 1-2 increase in the 78th minute. Later speed played a role. After each equality, the ecstasy in the stadium was at its peak and the smell of upheaval wafted through the air. Against MS Ashdod it took 11 minutes, against Beitar Jerusalem 16 minutes and then no less than three times in the playoffs: against Ashdod in eight minutes with 10 players, against Netanya in just two minutes and against Maccabi Tel Aviv the turnaround was completed in 12 minutes.

Even compared to Europe, Maccabi Haifa is at the top. There are quite a few groups that have turned the house into a fortress, but not all of them are on the verge of perfection. Barcelona, for example, has an unprecedented tally of just two goals in the 17 matches it has hosted so far in the Spanish league, but it has three reset draws alongside its 14 wins. Manchester City and Lance with better percentages, but also with one loss along with 16 wins and a draw.

Even Red Star Belgrade, Becher's new team that ran over the Serbian league and is still unbeaten with two rounds left to finish the season, is only the seventh-best in this category as of now. They have 16 wins and two draws at home.

Top 10 in Europe:

Maccabi Haifa - 16 wins and draws - 2.88 points per game
Celtic (Scotland) - 16 wins and draws - 2.88 The New Saints (Wales) - 16 wins and draws - 2.88
Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) - 15 wins and draws - 2.88
KI Klaksvik (Faroe Islands) - 13 wins and draws - 2.86

The Maroon Sprints (Malta) - 12 wins and draws - 2.85
Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) - 16 wins and 2 draws - 78.16
Rangers (Scotland) - 2 wins and 78 draws - 16.2
