Bamberg – It's an art to deliver a top performance exactly when it matters. Amy Waitz succeeded - and in the end, the young sports bowler of FC Seeshaupt won the Bavarian runner-up title in the U14 category.

At the state championship for young people, held in Bamberg, Waitz played strong results in the preliminary and final heats. With a total of 1061 wood (339 in clearing) she won silver.

Better in the field of 24 participants was only Jana Wehner from SC Luhe-Wildenau (Upper Palatinate), who came to 1077 wood. In the end, the decisive factor between the two was clearing, where Wehner was better by 18 wood. With her top ranking, Waitz has qualified for the German Individual Championship, which will take place on the Whitsun weekend in Eppelheim (near Heidelberg).

Amy Waitz sets personal bowling record

The Seeshaupterin was not impressed by the backdrop at the Bavarian title fights. "Amy was able to quickly get rid of her nervousness," it says on the FC homepage. With 135 wood on her first lane, she started well. Since it was Waitz's turn in the last group, she knew that around 480 pieces of wood were needed to make it to the final run. After the first three sets, Amy Waitz had already collected 416 wood. The sea captain did not let up and achieved a personal best with 551 wood. The gap to Wehner was only one wood, the gap to the third, Ivanna Herzog (Baar-Ebenhausen), was already decent with 23 wood.

Maximilian Strauß from SKK Hohenfurch takes the lead after the heat

In the final race of the best twelve, Waitz and Wehner were neck-and-neck in the first two rounds. The Seeshaupterin convinced with 142 and 139 wood. With a total of 281 wood, she was once again on course for "best performance". But then the program took its toll. Neither of them came close to the wood numbers they had achieved before. In the third round, Wehner finally pulled away decisively (131:117). With 510 wood, however, Waitz still achieved a strong result, which she had not achieved this year at both district and district level. The best result in the final was achieved by Miriam Gartner (530) from SV Mehring, who worked her way from twelfth place after the preliminary heat to sixth place (1013 wood).

Four more talents from the local district competed in the Bavarian championship. In the women's U18 category, Tamara Hey (FC Seeshaupt) had qualified for the title fights. However, with 523 wood (149 in clearing) she clearly missed the final run. On this day, at least 550 pieces of wood were needed. Gold ultimately went to Nora Schmidt (1176 wood) from SKV Kulmbach – she had achieved an outstanding result in the preliminary heat with 609 wood.

U14 duo from SKC Eberfing at the start in Bamberg

In the field of U14 boys there were two players from SKC Gut Holz Eberfing: Simon Zahler (468) and Linus Lindner (440) did not make it into the final run. Maximilian Strauss achieved this in the U18 boys: The sports bowler from SKK Hohenfurch even led the tableau after the first 120 throws. Strauss had scored a strong 607 wood (207 in clearing). Lukas Kennerknecht (TSV Betzigau/602) and Pascal Erseg (FV Weißenhorn/600) had also cracked the magic mark.

In the end, however, only Kennerknecht won a medal – 590 wood in the final race gave him bronze (1192). Strauss had to settle for 530 wood (181 clearing) in the final – he finished seventh (1137). Erseg fell back to sixth place with 550 wood. Gold in the U18 category went to Leon Held (1201) from Fidelio Mittelfranken, who had excelled in the final run with 628 wood (229 in clearing). Silver went to Florian Ilg (1194) from SKK Willmering, who put in two balanced performances (599/595).
