Ex-Bundesliga attacker Sandro Wagner quickly became one of the best-known TV pundits. Now he is leaving the streaming service DAZN.
Munich - Sandro Wagner was not a particularly conspicuous Bundesliga striker, but after his career as a player he made a name for himself as a TV pundit. The eight-time international started his job as a regular co-commentator on the streaming service DAZN in September 2020 after making his television debut on the public broadcast of the Champions League final in August 2020. Now DAZN surprisingly announced the end of its cooperation with Wagner.

Sandro Wagner is reorienting himself this year. The current coach made that clear when he announced at the end of March that he was leaving his club SpVgg Unterhaching. With the Regionalliga club, he is currently in first place and is well on his way towards promotion games to the 3rd league, but the Munich suburbs are trembling for the license due to the financial situation. Despite, or perhaps because of, his sporting success, Wagner now wants a change of scenery.
He communicated his retirement announcement for the summer transparently, but emphasized that he was "a learner as a coach and far from perfect". "That's exactly why I want to change my perspective in the summer and take a step in a different direction," explained the 35-year-old.

Sandro Wagner: Ex-Bayern striker joins ZDF's team of experts
His new club is not yet known, but his new employer is. The former attacker, who played for FC Bayern and Hertha BSC, among others, is leaving the streaming service DAZN to share his expertise exclusively on ZDF in the future. This was announced by the public television channel on Friday morning.
Wagner will join ZDF's team of experts from summer 2023, having already worked as a co-commentator at the recent World Cup in Qatar and the 2021 European Championship. In the future, he will be employed both in his usual job and as an expert for the station. He already made his first TV appearance at the 2020 Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and his boyhood club FC Bayern on ZDF. Apparently he has not forgotten him.

"ZDF made it possible for me to start as a TV expert in 2020 – now I've come full circle. I'm looking forward to many footballing highlights that I will be able to accompany regularly for ZDF – together with a great team that I have come to appreciate extremely in recent tournaments," said Wagner, looking forward to his new task.

"The European Championships in my own country in particular are an absolute highlight that excites me enormously," added the Munich native in the corresponding press release. The former Germany international, who won the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 21 European Under-2009 Championship in a DFB shirt, is apparently full of anticipation for next year's tournament.

At ZDF, the permanent newcomer is also causing a lot of enthusiasm. "We are delighted that Sandro Wagner will also be available to ZDF audiences at the home European Championship in 2024 with his footballing expertise and trenchant wording," said ZDF Head of Sports Yorck Polus. "And he is already contributing his expertise to the ZDF sports program in the run-up to next year's European Football Championship."
Wagner's future employer for his part-time job has been determined, and the young coach will probably announce his next club next. Before that, however, his focus is exclusively on the final spurt of the Regionalliga with SpVgg Unterhaching – and the possible promotion games in June. (ajr)
