2023-05-25T03:31:49.839Z

Highlights: Germany beat France 5-0 on Tuesday to reach World Cup quarter-finals. Quarter-final against Switzerland will take place in Riga, Latvia, from 19.20 CET. Germany's ice hockey team has to travel to Riga for the World Cupquarter-finals against Switzerland as planned.

Before Germany's World Cup quarter-final duel with Switzerland, the venue caused irritation. The DEB team has to go on a journey.

  • Ice Hockey World Cup: Germany – France 5:0 (2:0, 1:0, 2:0), Tuesday, 11.20 a.m.
  • Confusion over German venue ended: Quarter-final against Switzerland takes place in Riga
  • DEB team books quarter-final ticket: clear win against France

Result: Germany didn't let anything burn in a 5-0 victory against the French, who had already been eliminated, and still took fourth place in the group. From the first minute, DEB was wide awake and the better team in every respect, convincing with a cohesive team performance and fantastic goals.

This means that the team of national coach Harold Kreis is in the quarter-finals. The opponent there on Thursday evening from 19.20 CET is Switzerland, who have played a strong World Cup so far.

Confusion over German venue ended: Quarter-final against Switzerland takes place in Riga

Update from May 23, 23:15 p.m.: Germany's ice hockey team has to travel to Riga for the World Cup quarter-finals against Switzerland as planned. This was officially confirmed by the IIHF at the end of the preliminary round on Tuesday evening. Accordingly, the prestige duel will take place on Thursday at 15.20 (Sport1 and MagentaSport) in the Latvian capital. Previously, there had been confusion about the German venue (see update from 16:30 p.m.)

Co-hosts Latvia will then play Sweden (19:20 CET). The Latvians secured their place in the quarter-finals on the last day of the preliminary round with a somewhat surprising 4-3 (0-0, 2-1, 1-2) after extra time against group leaders Switzerland. The Swiss, who had won all six preliminary round games up to that point, spared some stars for the quarter-finals against Germany on Tuesday.

Ahead of match against Switzerland: Confusion over German quarter-finals

Update from May 23, 16:30 p.m.: After the quarter-finals have been fixed, the venue of the match against Switzerland is now causing confusion. According to the DEB, two days before the game, it is not yet certain where it will take place at all. According to the schedule of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the duel was supposed to take place in Riga, Latvia. So far, all matches in Group B of the World Cup have been played there, including all games of Germany's quarter-final opponents.

However, according to DEB, the federation is now considering hosting the match in Tampere, Finland, the other of the two World Cup venues. There, the German team had already played all group matches and would therefore not have to travel separately to the quarter-finals if it were to rise in Finland. An official statement on the fixtures is expected on Tuesday evening.

DEB team books quarter-final ticket: clear win against France

60th minute: The game is over! Germany deservedly qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals! Niederberger secures his first shut-out, he does not concede a goal against France. Great performance of the DEB!

57th minute: The game is now coming to an end, there's not really much going on here anymore. Germany plays down the game confidently, France rears up, but gets stuck on Niederberger, who wants to keep a clean sheet here. Leclerc and Stachowiak clash once again, but it doesn't really get serious.

54th minute: Next goal for Germany! Slowly, it is becoming clear, and rightly so. Great preparatory work by Noebels, who after a small solo thinks over to Kastner. He, in turn, only has to push in. Strong! It is Noebel's 20th World Championship assist in total.

51st minute: First Kastner has to go down for two minutes on the German side, then another Frenchman. Now it's going to be unnecessarily tough again, the game is actually decided. But France still wants to say goodbye here in some form.

47th minute: Hard check by Farnier. Without consideration, he crashes into the disc-leading Sam Souramies and hits him the knee. After a long video evidence, the referees decide: for Farnier the game is over because of the knee hit, big penalty, that was clearly too much from the Frenchman.

Germany raised: convincing performance against weak French

44th minute: Fischbuch! 4:0 for Germany! The DEB team takes advantage of the power play and scores the fourth goal. Great assist from Kai Wissmann, he passes inside to Fischbuch, who takes the puck ice-cold directly. Great goal!

44th minute: Peterka again! But the NHL star narrowly misses the goalie of the French, great save! After that, a Frenchman has to go out for two minutes after an overly hard elbow check against Kastner. Luckily the German wasn't hit right here, that could have ended badly. Powerplay now for the DEB team.

41st minute: The final section is underway! The number of shots on goal after two thirds speaks volumes for the course of the game so far: While France has only been dangerous seven times, Germany has a whopping 23 completions. Now it's time to stay focused and concentrated.

40th minute: The second period is played, France had another good chance at the end, but the puck landed on the plexiglass. A symbolic action for the French, where almost nothing comes together. Germany, on the other hand, is sovereign and has everything in its hands.

Sovereign performance: DEB team with one foot in the quarter-finals

38th minute: Although the game has already been presumably decided, Germany hardly takes their foot off the accelerator. The DEB team is still putting pressure on and is much closer to the fourth goal than France to the connection.

37th minute: Offensively, France are simply too harmless. As of now, the French are already two and a half games without scoring a goal of their own. Although they can play without pressure, this negative run does not seem to end today. Hardly anything is moving forward in our neighbouring country. Germany is on the verge of reaching the quarter-finals.

35th minute: Few chances right now, it's close, especially Nico Sturm leads a lot of duels on the German side. Suddenly, Müller finishes just in front of the French goal, but does not score, France was inattentive for a moment. Strongly parried by the French goalie!

31st minute: Good opportunity for the fourth goal, but Kastner fails in the turmoil in front of the French goal.

30th minute: France wants to go forward more and keep coming to conclusions. However, these can usually be blocked by Germany, the DEB team is clearly better and does not allow anything.

26th minute: Uiiii! This move would also have deserved a goal! Seider sends Tiffels with an amazing pass, who only has the French goalie in front of him and fails again at the post. Great hockey from Germany, which France dominates here at will.

Germany does magic: Peterka sensationally expands its lead

23rd minute: Tooooor! 3:0! " Jay-Jay" Peterka does it! He leaves the French backers standing like slalom poles and increases the score to 3-0 early on! Insane solo, a real goal of will.

21st minute: Let's move on! After a few seconds, Mo Müller reappears dangerously in front of the French case, but is defended.

2-0 after the first period: DEB curiously increases

20th minute: The first period is over and Germany deservedly leads 2-0. It could also be clearer, France hardly gets a chance and is mainly occupied with defending. As of now, the DEB team has booked the quarter-finals against Switzerland.

19th minute: Now there's a lot of steam in the game! First Kahun refueled and only hit the post, then France also became dangerous for the first time. Matthias Niederberger in the German goal, however, makes a strong save against Toto Rech.

17th minute: Tooooooor for Germany! The 2:0! What a crooked thing! From Tiffels' shin guard, the puck goes over the line after a one-two with Peterka, the French goalie can't get in time.

Germany on course for the quarter-finals – France have little chance

16th minute: Germany dominates the French, who can usually only free themselves with icings. The DEB is currently clearly on course for the quarter-finals.

14th minute: Peterka pops up in front of the French goal after a simple but powerful pass. However, his attempt is blocked. Germany continues to dominate the game.

10th minute: France narrowly survives the power play, Germany had two good chances, but among other things only hit the post. Ehl shortly afterwards with the next chance. Although the second goal does not come out of it, France is having a hard time.

6th minute: Anthony Rech has to sit out, first time penalty for France. Germany now two minutes on the power play. The DEB team immediately puts more pressure on and wants to go for the second goal.

Dream start: DEB team starts early

4th minute: Tooooooor for Germany! Ehl does it! Stachowiak fills up insanely strong and lays off fantastically on Ehl, 1:0 for the German team. On his knees, Stachowiak keeps his balance and overview, great assist.

2nd minute: France wants to build up pressure right away, but Germany is quite sure and won't let anything burn for the time being.

1st minute: The last group match of the German team is underway! Things are about to heat up.

Update from May 23, 11:18 a.m.: The teams enter the ice. Everything is ready, in a few moments it starts!

Update from May 23, 11:05 a.m.: The line-up of the DEB team, which has won three times in a row, is here. Compared to the Kanter victory against Hungary, Harold Kreis makes only one substitution. Due to injury, Daniel Fischbuch moves into the third row for Manuel Wiederer. Especially in the power play, he should play an important role.

Update from May 23, 10:40 a.m.: Slowly but surely, things are getting serious in Tampere. The countdown is on: the game starts in 40 minutes. Will Germany make it to the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Championship? Or will today's performance against the French already be the last game of Harold Kreis's team? We are curious!

Preliminary report: Tampere – Germany's national team has a place in the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Cup completely in its own hands. After the 7-2 victory of the team of national coach Harold Kreis against Hungary on Sunday, rivals Denmark lost on Monday with 1:4 (1:1, 0:1, 0:2) against the group runners-up Sweden.

Ice Hockey World Championship
Place:Arena Riga, Nokia Arena
Date:Friday, 12 May 2023, to Sunday, 28 May 2023
Defending champion:Finland
Record winners:Canada (27 titles)

After defeat of Denmark: With a victory, DEB team is safely in the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Championship

So it is clear that with a win on Tuesday against France (here you can find out where you can watch the match of the DEB team on TV), which no longer has a chance of progressing, the German team will definitely reach fourth place and thus be in the round of the last eight. Even a victory for Denmark in the evening against defending champions and hosts Finland would not change that.

If Germany loses the match against France after regular time, Denmark must also lose to Finland. Should Germany lose after extra time or penalty shootout, Denmark should win at most after extra time or penalty shootout, but not in regular time. Germany recently won the direct duel with the Danes 6-4.

Ice Hockey World Cup: Germany vs. France today in the live ticker

Coach Kreis is already eyeing a possible quarter-final of the German team against Switzerland before the last World Cup group match against France. "Of course, we are dealing with France right now, but I have already taken note of Switzerland's performance," he said in Tampere on Monday. In 2010 and 2021, the German team had already secured a place in the semi-finals against the Swiss.

However, before it possibly goes against the sovereign first of Group B, there is still the duel with the French. Follow the game of the Ice Hockey World Championship between Germany and France, on Tuesday at 11.20 a.m., here in the live ticker. (wuc/dpa)
