Update from Tuesday, May 23, 13:40 p.m.: Germany wins 5-0 against France and celebrates its fourth consecutive victory at the Ice Hockey World Championship. Due to the success, the DEB selection has qualified for the quarter-finals. On Thursday (25 May) they face Switzerland at 15:20 CET.

Tampere – The start of the World Cup was anything but optimal for the German national ice hockey team. There were three narrow defeats against Sweden, Finland and the USA. In all games, the DEB selection was on an equal footing with the favorites, but no points jumped out. The goal of the quarter-finals was at stake and in the games that followed, the pressure was enormous for Germany.

However, the national ice hockey team showed no nerves, but brought their full quality to the ice in the games against Denmark, Austria and Hungary and celebrated three partly clear victories. Ahead of the final preliminary round match against France, the DEB selection is in fourth place in the group, which would entitle them to reach the quarter-finals. Only Denmark can still intercept Germany, but the Scandinavians are only outsiders against Sweden and Finland.

"We're playing a bit too complicated, we can't take our foot off the gas," defender Fabio Wagner criticised his own team after the 7-2 thrashing of Hungary. Against the French selection, Germany will again be favorites. However, national coach Harold Kreis will have to do without striker Manuel Wiederer in the last preliminary round match at the World Cup. "He's injured and won't be able to play," the coach said.

If the DEB selection qualifies for the quarter-finals, the date and opponent have already been set. In Group B, Switzerland can no longer be ousted from first place in the table and will meet the fourth-placed team in Group A – Germany or Denmark.

Ice Hockey World Championship: Possible opponent in the quarter-finals has already been determined

"Of course, we are currently dealing with France, but I have already taken note of Switzerland's performance. The Swiss have high standards and have a good team together. They play very disciplined," said national coach Kreis about the possible opponent in the knockout phase. The Swiss have won all six games so far and are now considered one of the World Cup favorites.

In Switzerland, the national team is already called "white ballet" because of its convincing performances. "I don't know much about opera and ballet now. But certainly not 'the dying swan'," said Kreis when asked what the name for his team would be. Bully against Switzerland would be on Thursday (25 May), but first France must be beaten. (smr
