Lothar Matthäus tears FC Bayern apart: "The team is playing worse under Tuchel"

FC Bayern could experience their first titleless season since 2012. Lothar Matthäus also blames coach Thomas Tuchel.

Munich - On Saturday at around 17.20 CET, the crisis at FC Bayern could reach its next climax. Then – and the probability is high – the storms of jubilation could break out at Signal Iduna Park and Borussia Dortmund could raise the trophy, while the German record champions at the same time mourn their first titleless season since 2012 at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion in Cologne. Lothar Matthäus also holds coach Thomas Tuchel responsible for the fact that it has come to this.

"Of course, even before the change of coach, a lot of mistakes were made, which ultimately led to this situation. But the team, which was still on course for the treble under Nagelsmann, is playing worse under Tuchel," Matthäus is quoted as saying in Bild – and goes for a sweeping blow. "The squad is so strong individually that you have to at least become champions with it. But the team doesn't work because everyone is preoccupied with themselves."

Tuchel has increased the uncertainty even more, "because at his press conferences, which seem a bit strange to me, he always talks about how difficult everything is and what doesn't work," Matthäus continues.

"Compared to the 6-0 win against Schalke on Matchday 32 a week later, in the 1-3 defeat against Leipzig, Gnabry suddenly played on the left, Coman on the right and Müller as a centre-forward, which is certainly not his best position. How are we supposed to create stability and security?"

Now it's up to Tuchel to prove in the coming season that FC Bayern can do more – even if the image of the new coach has already been tarnished, as Matthäus says. The reason is the (probably) three playful titles within two months. According to the Sky expert, the new players, such as Declan Rice, Adrien Rabiot or Julian Alvaréz, whom Tuchel is said to have already demanded, should also cause uncertainty in the team.

No need for major upheaval at FC Bayern

According to Matthäus, a major upheaval in the Munich team is not necessary: "Bayern doesn't need many new players. The big and very expensive upheaval has already taken place. I would trust 85 to 90 percent of the current team, even though they have missed the Mia-San-Mia recently. But above all, this is also a question of leadership and motivation," he told Bild.

But what's next for FC Bayern's management? The eagerly awaited supervisory board meeting will take place on 30 May, when it will be decided whether CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic will continue to steer the fortunes of the Munich club.

For Matthäus, one thing is certain: "It looks like it won't go on with Oliver. The current CFO Jan-Christian Dreesen would be a strong, long-term solution." And Salihamidzic? "Brazzo is still close to Uli Hoeness, that could save him." Whether and how things will continue for the two will definitely not be decided until next Tuesday.
