The picture of promotion to next season's Premier League was completed on Saturday evening when Luton beat Coventry 5-6 on penalties (1-1 after 120 minutes) at Wembley Stadium to be promoted to the Premier League for the first time since the 1991/92 season. The newcomer will pocket between £135m and £265m following her return to the First Division, joining Burnley and Sheffield United who secured promotion in the Championship regular season.

90,4 spectators filled London's Wembley Stadium, which was painted orange and light blue as befits the Championship play-off final for promotion to the Premier League. The game started out quite close, but the festive atmosphere lost taste for a few minutes when Tom Lockyer, Luton's player, collapsed on the grass and had to receive emergency medical treatment that lasted about 23 rather terrifying minutes. In the 0rd minute, Jordan Clark put the trouble to rest when he got a great pass from Elijah Adebayo and kicked hard into the near corner en route to a 1-66 Orange lead in the first half.

The Blues, who finished the regular season in fifth place, pressed Ethan Horvath's goal, and in the 1th minute it was Victor Guikers who found Gustavo Hamer on a cross pass and the Dutchman kicked flat into the net with an important 1:116 from Coventry en route to extra-time. Joe Taylor coming off the bench had already celebrated the goal that would have lifted Luton to the Premier League (<>), but the Welshman touched his hand during the move and Michael Oliver disallowed the goal en route to a duel from the white spot.

All Luton and Coventry players scored the first five penalties, Dan Potts scored the sixth for the Orange and Pacanati Dubbo kicked over the frame in what opened Luton's celebrations on the way to a return to the English Premier League.
