Narrow Werder defeat at Union Berlin – Füllkrug has to share goal-scoring cannon

SV Werder Bremen lost the last Bundesliga game of the season 0-1 (0-0) against 1. The match report of the DeichStube.

Berlin – The wish was clear: SV Werder Bremen wanted to sell themselves properly at Union Berlin after the successful relegation. But above all, the team had set itself the goal of helping top striker Niclas Füllkrug to become a top scorer. "We want to play well, defend and show our positive face. With a good team performance, we also increase the chance that 'Fülle' will make another one," explained head coach Ole Werner on the "Sky" microphone. However, this did not happen. Werder lost 0-1 (0-0) in the capital, the Bremen attacker had to share first place in the scorers list with Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku in the end.

As expected, there were some changes in terms of personnel, after all, Jens Stage (yellow card), Mitchell Weiser (muscle injury) and Christian Groß (knee problems) were missing three potential regular players for the season finale. "We're here with the very last squad, but the lads will give everything once again to maybe take three points here as well," Werner promised shortly before kick-off. Romano Schmid and Niklas Schmidt started in the eighth positions, while Leonardo Bittencourt once again became Weiser's replacement on the right. Ilia Gruev started as a midfielder, somewhat surprisingly Lee Buchanan was allowed to play as a left winger from the start. Perennial favourite Anthony Jung, who had been called up in all 33 previous games and was in the starting line-up for SV Werder Bremen 32 times, sat on the bench.

The hosts, for whom nothing less than Champions League qualification was at stake this afternoon, got off to a flying start. First, Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl cleared the corner with a header in front of Sheraldo Becker (8th), shortly afterwards Buchanan then snatched the ball off Janik Haberer's foot (10th). To the great surprise, referee Patrick Ittrich (Hamburg) judged the action to be a foul and pointed to the penalty spot, but after the video assistant referee, the referee looked at the situation again and quickly revised his previous decision. A little later, Haberer was then placed by Milos Veljkovic just outside the penalty area, on the following free kick Marvin Ducksch just blocked the quite dangerous shot of Union Berlin's Christopher Trimmel (16th).

For Niklas Schmidt, the game was already over. After a collision in the early stages, the midfielder had already been given a head bandage, then looked slightly dazed in the following minutes and finally had to make way for Maximilian Philipp (23rd). And it was the substitute who had the first halfway good chance for Werder Bremen, but his header after a Ducksch corner was clearly missed (26th).

The capitals continued to struggle for the lead, but the very clear scoring opportunities failed to materialize. First, keeper Jiri Pavlenka was on the spot with his fists on a free kick from Trimmel (31st), then Buchanan cleared in front of Haberer (34th). Shortly before the break, the visitors stood out again offensively, after a Ducksch free kick landed in the wall, the ball found its way to Veljkovic, but the defender of SV Werder Bremen did not hit the ball properly from the turn and Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had no problems at all (44th).

And Niclas Füllkrug? In the first round, he waited in vain to further increase his personal hit account. Instead, the competition in the battle for the top scorer crown gradually got on his feet, as both Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo and Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku had struck once before the break and had now reached 15 goals for the season.

Immediately after the change of sides, Füllkrug was involved in a promising counter-attack situation for the Green-Whites, but it was not really productive in the end (49th). Instead, it was once again the home team of 1. FC Union Berlin who brought the ball dangerously on goal. Jerome Roussillon tried it powerfully from distance, but Pavlenka cleared to the corner (52nd). Werder Bremen then had a bit of luck three minutes later, as Becker had slotted his shot into the Bremen box - but the Dutchman was just offside when the goal was scored (55th). For the visitors, it was time for the next change, Jung came in for Buchanan and so still to his 34th appearance this season (61st).

After a Trimmel corner, Danilho Doekhi headed the ball towards goal, where Ducksch cleared at the very last moment for the already beaten Pavlenka (67th). Werder Bremen hardly provided any real relief at this point - and conceded the 0:1 (81st) after an untenable shot by Rani Khedira in the final phase. And just as Ducksch missed the last opportunity to equalise in Berlin (90+1), news arrived from Leipzig that Nkunku had struck again in the victory over relegated FC Schalke 04 and was now level with Niclas Füllkrug in the scorers' list.
