SV Werder Bremen lost the last Bundesliga game of the season 0-1 (0-0) against 1. The match report of the DeichStube.

Berlin – The wish was clear: SV Werder Bremen wanted to sell themselves properly at Union Berlin after the successful relegation. But above all, the team had set itself the goal of helping top striker Niclas Füllkrug to become a top scorer. "We want to play well, defend and show our positive face. With a good team performance, we also increase the chance that 'Fülle' will make another one," explained head coach Ole Werner on the "Sky" microphone. However, this did not happen. Werder lost 0-1 (0-0) in the capital, the Bremen attacker had to share first place in the scorers list with Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku in the end.

As expected, there were some changes in terms of personnel, after all, Jens Stage (yellow card), Mitchell Weiser (muscle injury) and Christian Groß (knee problems) were missing three potential regular players for the season finale. "We're here with the very last squad, but the lads will give everything once again to maybe take three points here as well," Werner promised shortly before kick-off. Romano Schmid and Niklas Schmidt started in the eighth positions, while Leonardo Bittencourt once again became Weiser's replacement on the right. Ilia Gruev started as a midfielder, somewhat surprisingly Lee Buchanan was allowed to play as a left winger from the start. Perennial favourite Anthony Jung, who had been called up in all 33 previous games and was in the starting line-up for SV Werder Bremen 32 times, sat on the bench.

Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin: Niklas Schmidt has to be substituted due to injury

The hosts, for whom nothing less than Champions League qualification was at stake this afternoon, got off to a flying start. First, Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl cleared the corner with a header in front of Sheraldo Becker (8th), shortly afterwards Buchanan then snatched the ball off Janik Haberer's foot (10th). To the great surprise, referee Patrick Ittrich (Hamburg) judged the action to be a foul and pointed to the penalty spot, but after the video assistant referee, the referee looked at the situation again and quickly revised his previous decision. A little later, Haberer was then placed by Milos Veljkovic just outside the penalty area, on the following free kick Marvin Ducksch just blocked the quite dangerous shot of Union Berlin's Christopher Trimmel (16th).

For Niklas Schmidt, the game was already over. After a collision in the early stages, the midfielder had already been given a head bandage, then looked slightly dazed in the following minutes and finally had to make way for Maximilian Philipp (23rd). And it was the substitute who had the first halfway good chance for Werder Bremen, but his header after a Ducksch corner was clearly missed (26th).

Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin: Anthony Jung plays in all 34 Bundesliga games

The capitals continued to struggle for the lead, but the very clear scoring opportunities failed to materialize. First, keeper Jiri Pavlenka was on the spot with his fists on a free kick from Trimmel (31st), then Buchanan cleared in front of Haberer (34th). Shortly before the break, the visitors stood out again offensively, after a Ducksch free kick landed in the wall, the ball found its way to Veljkovic, but the defender of SV Werder Bremen did not hit the ball properly from the turn and Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had no problems at all (44th).

And Niclas Füllkrug? In the first round, he waited in vain to further increase his personal hit account. Instead, the competition in the battle for the top scorer crown gradually got on his feet, as both Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo and Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku had struck once before the break and had now reached 15 goals for the season.

Immediately after the change of sides, Füllkrug was involved in a promising counter-attack situation for the Green-Whites, but it was not really productive in the end (49th). Instead, it was once again the home team of 1. FC Union Berlin who brought the ball dangerously on goal. Jerome Roussillon tried it powerfully from distance, but Pavlenka cleared to the corner (52nd). Werder Bremen then had a bit of luck three minutes later, as Becker had slotted his shot into the Bremen box - but the Dutchman was just offside when the goal was scored (55th). For the visitors, it was time for the next change, Jung came in for Buchanan and so still to his 34th appearance this season (61st).

Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin: Rani Khedira scores goal - Niclas Füllkrug is top scorer

In the Bremen penalty area, it remained eventful. After a Trimmel corner, Danilho Doekhi headed the ball towards goal, where Ducksch cleared at the very last moment for the already beaten Pavlenka (67th). Then Becker tried it from an acute angle, but the ball rushed past the box (73rd). Werder Bremen hardly provided any real relief at this point - and conceded the 0:1 (81st) after an untenable shot by Rani Khedira in the final phase. The atmosphere literally exploded in the stadium at the Alte Försterei, the door to the Champions League was wide open again. Especially since shortly afterwards Eintracht Frankfurt managed to equalize against Freiburg. The fact that Randal Kolo Muani had scored for the Hessians was particularly important for Niclas Füllkrug, because now the next pursuer had increased his yield in the goalscorer ranking to 15 goals.

And just as Ducksch missed the last opportunity to equalise in Berlin (90+1), news arrived from Leipzig that Nkunku had struck again in the victory over relegated FC Schalke 04 and was now level with Niclas Füllkrug in the scorers' list. However, the 30-year-old's joy at this personal success is likely to have diminished only to a limited extent. (mbü)

Werder Bremen im Live-Ticker gegen den 1. FC Union Berlin: Das Spiel läuft

1. Min: Das Spiel läuft. Werder beginnt ganz in schwarz, Union spielt in rot-weiß.

15.20 pm: Ole Werner is in an OnField interview with Sky and talks about Niclas Füllkrug, among others: "We want to counter this and show our own face, which has been predominantly positive this season. I hope that Fülle can still do one or the other today."

15:17 p.m.: In less than 15 minutes it starts: Can Werder win on the last matchday here today at Union? And almost more importantly: Will Füllkrug be the top scorer?

15:14 p.m.: The match will be refereed by Patrick Ittrich from Hamburg. His assistants are Sascha Thielert and Frederick Asmuth. The fourth official is Florian Lechner. Guido Winkmann and Markus Sinn are sitting in the video cellar.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against 1. FC Union Berlin: Niclas Füllkrug can become top scorer

15.10 pm: The stadium announcer has just read out the Bremen line-up and earns a loud "So what!" from the Union fans after each name. But then he greets Werder's assistant coach Patrick Kohlmann, praises his commitment to the "Iron" and shouts: "Welcome, Patrick Kohlmann!" And this time he gets a loud "football god". "Kohle" has played 179 times for the Berliners.

15:03 p.m.: Union, on the other hand, is fourth, level on points with SC Freiburg. The Berliners have the four goals better goal difference. If Union wins, they are very likely to remain in the Champions League place. If the capitals do not win, they will have to rely on the help of Eintracht Frankfurt, who will host SC Freiburg.

15.00 pm: A few more sentences about the starting situation: If Werder (36 points) wins the game, they will remain twelfth. If Bremen draw, TSG Hoffenheim (35) could pass by. In the event of a defeat, not only Hoffenheim, but also FC Augsburg (34) could still catch up with SV Werder.

14:52 p.m.: And something else from the statistics department: Union Berlin is extremely strong at home, the Berliners have not lost the last 22 games at the Alte Försterei. In addition, they have won all their games in the season finale so far. That has been the case three times in the Bundesliga so far, three times Union played at home.

14.45 pm: A brief look at the still young history of this Bundesliga duel: Werder and Union have faced each other five times in the league so far. The German capitals won four times. Werder only won their first meeting in September 2019, with goals scored by Klaassen and Füllkrug. In the only meeting in the DFB-Pokal in August 2009, Bremen won 5-0 at the Union.

14:38 p.m.: Of course, the focus at Werder today is Niclas Füllkrug. The striker leads the Bundesliga's scoring charts with 16 goals and is looking to secure the cannon today. Four players are behind him with 14 goals each. The list of names is quite prominent with Gnabry, Grifo, Kolo Muani and Nkunku. Of course, we are also looking at the other places on this matchday 34.

14:32 p.m.: And this is how Union coach Urs Fischer sets up his team today: Rönnow – Doekhi, Knoche, Diogo Leite – Trimmel, Khedira, Roussillon – Laidouni, Haberer – Behrens, Becker. On the bench of the Unioners sit Grill, Gießelmann, Jaeckel, Juranovic, Pantovic, Seguin, Jordan, Leweling, Michel.

14:28 p.m.: Due to some injuries and the suspension of Stage, there are hardly any surprises in the Werder line-up. However, few would have expected Buchanan to start at the back left for Jung.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against 1. FC Union Berlin: The Werder line-up is here

14:24: And this is how Ole Werner brings his team into the game today: Pavlenka – Veljkovic, Stark, Friedl – Bittencourt, Gruev, Buchanan – Schmid, Schmidt – Ducksch, Füllkrug. There are only five outfield players on the Bremen bench today next to reserve goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. These are Jung, Philipp, Dinkci, Mbom and Chiarodia.

14:22 p.m.: While for Werder, who made it clear last weekend that they will stay in the league, it's all about their place in the league – Bremen are currently in 12th place, but could still slip to 13 or 14, for Union Berlin it is nothing less than one of the most important games in the club's recent history. With a victory, the capitals can make their participation in the Champions League clear. And that's just four years after promotion to the Bundesliga.

14.15 CET: Hello and welcome to the last live ticker of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season. Today, SV Werder Bremen are guests at 1.

Werder Bremen vs. 1. FC Union Berlin - the preliminary report:

Werder Bremen want to give everything against Union Berlin – even without the obligation to deliver

SV Werder Bremen will play away against 34. FC Union Berlin on the 1th and final Bundesliga matchday (Saturday, 15.30 CET/DeichStube live ticker) - and want to give everything again despite having managed to stay in the league. The preliminary report.

The Bundesliga final has a lot to offer this year. In all nine games, which kick off next Saturday at 15.30 CET, there is a lot at stake for at least one team. It's either about the league title, against relegation or about various dreams of the European Cup. SV Werder Bremen plays a supporting role in all this turbulent back and forth. Thanks to the relegation, which was bagged last weekend by the 1-1 draw against 1. "You don't experience that too often, that you don't have the greatest pressure on matchday 34 – at least I haven't had that very often," explains a relieved Ole Werner. Nevertheless, the coach does not want to end the season with his team. Especially since it could tip the scales as to whether the current opponent Union Berlin or rather SC Freiburg succeeds in qualifying for the million-dollar Champions League.

Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin in the live ticker: Ole Werner's team should "get everything out of it" in the last game

Werder Bremen The head coach therefore expects plenty of work in the capital in Saturday's game (15.30 CET, DeichStube live ticker), the Köpenick team are fourth in the table after the crowning glory of a really strong season. "They're right up there, they've always shown themselves at this top level," praised Werner. "We're preparing for an away game against a top team that will do everything they can to defend their place." But the 35-year-old announced: "That's exactly how we want to win the game. It's also our job in the last game to get everything out of ourselves. As in every Bundesliga game, the tension will be there, but of course it's good that we were able to avoid the fact that it's still a matter of staying in the league on the last matchday."

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against 1. FC Union Berlin: Tipping the scales in the fight for Europe?

Among other things, almost three years ago it was different. At that time, Werder Bremen was on the verge of relegation, saved themselves thanks to their own victory against Cologne and the help of Union Berlin in the relegation against 1. Werder could now give something back to the Alte Försterei in a figurative sense. But Clemens Fritz dismisses the idea. "We have no debt to Union or Freiburg. We want to pick up our points again this time," said Werder's head of professional football. "Every team has one season to score their points. Freiburg and Union are both playing an excellent series, one can only take one's hat off to what they get out of their resources. I would begrudge it to both. At the end of the day, it can only be one."

The popular lure offers in liquid form – be it beer from Berlin or wine from Baden – have not yet existed on the part of the competing clubs, at least at Werder Bremen. "Not that I know of," says Ole Werner with a laugh, but he doesn't need offers of this kind either: "You always have a responsibility for the competition, we don't need an additional incentive."
