Superhero moms, a large starting field, two records: Hourly team run delivers a lot of spectacle

2023-05-29T10:12:39.864Z

Highlights: The 27th Hour Team Run in Obersöchering was characterized by a high level - there were two records in the main run. In the junior category, 66 teams competed. Nils Fischer and Simon Schmidmayr completed 29 laps of 700 meters each in the competition time. The second record, even an all-time record, was set by the women-only teams: There, Priska auf der Maur and Theresa Ortenreiter completed 26 laps with a time of 1:01:47 hours.

The 27th Hour Team Run in Obersöchering was characterized by a high level - there were two records in the main run. In the junior category, 66 teams competed.

Obersöchering – When Munich residents come to the countryside in large numbers, especially for leisure activities, this does not always inspire enthusiasm among the local population. At the SV Söchering hour team run, things are different. Those responsible are pleased that LG Stadtwerke München has discovered the event for itself.

Munich men's team completes 29 laps

For a few years now, athletes from this association have been coming regularly to several clubs. The ambitious men and women from the "08/10K" performance group, which specialises in medium-distances, ensure a high level. At the 27th edition of the competition for teams of two, LG was responsible for two records.

There was the top mark of 29 laps, with which Nils Fischer and Simon Schmidmayr thrilled. Since the track was extended a little a few years ago, no team came up with this number. However, the "record run" project hung by a thread. One second before the competition time of 60 minutes ended, the two LG athletes clapped their hands at the beginning of the transition zone – according to the regulations, the 700-meter lap may then still be run to the end. The duo completed 29 laps and a time of 1:02:11 hours. In 2009, Norman Feiler/Andre Green needed 29:1:01 hours on the shorter course for their 00 laps.

Record run by a Munich women's team

"It was very exhausting," Fischer said, adding with a smile: "From the halfway point it didn't get faster, it got harder." Schmidmayr found the climb up to the meadow part of the route "quite brutal". Nevertheless, the two had their fun. "It's a cool event," said Schmidmayr. Both used the team run as interval training. They are currently in the middle of the competition season. Most recently, the middle distance runners were at the "Long Running Night" in Karlsruhe, and soon they will go to the Sparkassen Gala in Regensburg.

Speaking of competitions: The four athletes of the "Schönegger Käse Alm" (Peter Vogt, Stefan Fichtl, Simon Onnich, Benedikt Mergler) had completed 5.3 kilometers at the highest pace the day before at the company run in Augsburg. Onnich was the best of the quartet with 16:50 minutes. Such a performance leaves its mark. The hourly team run served as a "quick run-out", as Vogt jokingly said. In the end, however, they were fast: Vogt/Fichtl completed 28 laps (3rd place overall), Mergler/Onnich 27 laps (7th place overall).

On course for a record: LG runners Theresa Ortenreiter (front) and Priska auf der Maur (left) ran 26 laps – top value for an all-female team. © Paul Hopp

The second record, even an all-time record, was set by the women-only teams: There, Priska auf der Maur and Theresa Ortenreiter (08/10K) completed 26 laps with a time of 1:01:47 hours. In doing so, they broke the record set by the duo Mikki Heiß (Iffeldorf)/Steffi Volke (Huglfing) in 2009: The two marathon specialists had completed 26 laps in 1:02:20.

For the first time, "Gaudi relay" at the hour team run

The two, who won the mixed classification together 14 years ago in the jersey of TSV Penzberg with 27 rounds, were also there this year: Markus Brennauer and Ramona März. Brennauer again took first place in the mixed teams this year with Corinna Braun (26 laps). März made a comeback after a long break from competition; with Michael Speinle she achieved a remarkable 23 laps.

The field of participants in this year's main race was large: 47 teams of two (more than at any time since 2015) set off on the lap hunt. In addition, this time there were seven teams of four in the "Gaudi Relay", which was held for the first time. "Something is stirring," said a visibly satisfied Hubert Schmid, head of the "ski/running/cycling" department at SV Söchering.

Once again, the organizing team had everything under control. In the transition zone, due to the large field, there were situations at the beginning in which mostly faster athletes were slowed down or could only prevent a collision with a lot of skill. As time went on, everyone involved – recreational runners and ambitious runners – found a good "workflow".

With all the concentration on laps and times, the hourly team run is also quite relaxed. SVS division boss Schmid has a short chat with Rupert Sedlmayr, who is waiting for his brother Martin in the transition zone. "That's part of running support," Schmid said with a smile.

Geschwister Rath deliver a strong performance

The Sedlmayrs were not the only ones who competed within the family: Josef Streicher (TSV Peißenberg) ran with his son Simon – 24 laps were completed in the end. Twelve-year-old Alicia Voit from Iffeldorf, who competed for SC Partenkirchen, had not found a partner for the school run, she says. That's when her mother, Ulrike Strobel-Voit, stepped in. Together they completed 15 laps in the main race.

The performance of the siblings Julia and Maximilian Rath was absolutely outstanding: Together the Penzbergs ran in the category "Youth male" - and in the end had completed 27 laps (1:01:49). For a better result, you have to go back a long way: In 2014, Lucas Herbeck/Tom Jäger (TSV Penzberg) ran 27 laps in 1:00:33 hours in the youth category.

Before the main run, the minis (over 20 minutes) and then the students (over 30 minutes) traditionally start on a 300-meter lap in Obersöchering. Who starts where is decided on the basis of the overall age of the two athletes. Loudly cheered on by parents and siblings, the offspring were eager to get involved. This year, a total of 66 teams were in action. The winners of the male students, Benedikt Fels (TSV Wolfratshausen)/Seppi Schilcher (SC Moosham) shone with 30 rounds (30:53). The number was previously reached only five times, but in some cases with faster times, the SVS said.
