Neufahrn – The knot has burst. After consistently good performances recently, judoka Fabian Kansy finally secured the medal he deserved. In the European Cup in Sarajevo, the young athlete from Neufahrn won silver.

After a bye in round one, he defeated his Swedish opponent at the last second with a shoulder throw. He also gave his next opponent from Turkey, against whom the German had lost at the 2021 European Championship, no chance. The newcomer returned the favor with a clever fight and a well-deserved victory. In the next round, he secured a place in the semi-finals with a ground grab against Marko Vrhovnik (Slovenia) after three fights. The opponent there, however, was none other than Gergely Nerpel. "He's been fifth in a Grand Slam tournament before," explains the young German fighter, who competes in the weight class up to 90 kilograms. But the 21-year-old dominated the duel and was already ahead with two penalties when he brought the Hungarian to the ground with a lever. Even now, no one could take away his first medal in the European Cup.

Now it was time to mobilize all forces once again in the final. For a long time, the judoka showed an outstanding performance against the Bosnian Bozidar Vucurevic, and until shortly before the end it was 2:2 after punishments. But the Bosnian took advantage of a little carelessness and thus secured success. "It's a bit of a shame that I lost the final. But I'm also happy with silver," said Kansy, who had always narrowly missed the podium recently. In addition, there was another reward for the newcomer. He was allowed to compete in his first Grand Prix in Linz, Austria, last weekend, and in a few days he will go to the European Open in Madrid. In Linz, it is important for the squad athlete to "look from fight to fight". Because he assumes that he can also beat some opponents at the next higher level. The goal is to be able to compete in consistently high-class tournaments. "To do that, I have to show that I belong there," says the newcomer, who is currently riding the wave of success, clarifying his ambitions. Because he also got off to a dream start in the Judo Bundesliga with his team from Esslingen. "So far, we've won everything, even against our biggest rivals from Abensberg and Leipzig."
