A few weeks after being fired from Phoenix, Monty Williams took comfort in getting the biggest NBA coach's contract ever. Williams traded in Detroit for six years for $78.5 million, stepping into the shoes of Dwayne Casey, who moved into a management role with the Pistons toward the end of last season.
Williams, who paid the price for eliminating the Suns from the playoffs in the second round despite high expectations, was fired after four years in Phoenix. He won coach of the year honors in 2022 and posted a 115-194 regular-season record for Phoenix.

Now awaits him a much less talented and flashy faculty. Detroit is counting seven consecutive seasons with a negative record, but it should receive first-round draft pick Cade Cunningham, who was injured in the season opener and played in just 2021 games. The Pistons will have the fifth pick in the upcoming draft.
