+++ VfB Stuttgart deservedly beat Hamburger SV 3-0 and are almost certain to stay in the league. HSV was inferior in all respects and needs a miracle in the second leg to get promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. Despite the clear victory, VfB were even more gracious and could have won much higher. Guirassy, in particular, should have scored more than one goal, but the striker failed twice in front of Hamburg's goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes: first in the running game, then in the penalty. HSV player Suhonen was sent off with a red card in the 69th minute.

68th minute: Next chance for VfB: Sosa crosses from the left and Pfeiffer lurks at the far post, who puts his header first on the ground, then past.

60th minute: What's going on here? Stuttgart is suddenly merciless and HSV has to be careful not to get completely under the wheels.

HALF TIME: After this first half, VfB deservedly lead 1-0 against HSV, some of whom are swimming here. However, the Swabians have to be reproached for not leading higher. Guirassy, in particular, should have contributed at least one goal. First he forgives in the current game free standing in front of Hamburg's goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes, then from the penalty spot.

45th minute: VfB again! Sosa serves a free kick from the left half-space to the head of Mavropanos, who this time heads over.

38th minute: The visitors from the north are getting better. Dompé dribbles over the left in the direction of the Stuttgart box, but his shot misses clearly on the left.

35th minute: Now Hamburg's Glatzel finishes in the penalty area, but it is blocked.

28th minute: Now HSV on the right with Jatta, who lays back on Kittel. The HSV kicker shoots past.

23rd minute: What an opportunity! Vagnoman sends Guirassy into the lane, who runs alone towards the Hamburg goal and shoots the ball miserably into the arms of HSV keeper Fernandes. He has to do it.

20th minute: Stuttgart continue to dominate the action. One gets the impression that HSV still hasn't come to terms with the early goal they conceded.

14th minute: VfB are now pushing to 2-0 here, but the Swabians still lack precision in the final third.

Führich misses chance to make it 2-0 for VfB

HSV player Laszlo Benes will be sidelined in the relegation play-off against VfB, as he tore a muscle fibre against SV Sandhausen on the last matchday. Ludovit Reis returns after his yellow card.

VfB Stuttgart – Hamburger SV today in the live ticker: Trembling for Bredlow

It is still questionable whether goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow will be fit in the relegation first leg against HSV. If it does, it will be a "precision landing," said VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß at the press conference. During the warm-up before the game against Hoffenheim, the keeper suffered a torn medial ligament in his knee, but held out for the game. After that, the injury developed to the negative, Hoeneß explained.

Dan-Axel Zagadou has overcome his foot pain and trained again for the first time on Tuesday. However, it will probably not be enough for the starting eleven in the first leg of the relegation.

VfB Stuttgart – Hamburger SV today in the live ticker: Bundesliga club with question marks

Ahead of the relegation, VfB are worried about the use of goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth told dpa: "It could be a precision landing with Fabian by Thursday." The keeper had injured his knee during the warm-up before the VfB match against TSG Hoffenheim (1-1), but had still played.

Meanwhile, Dan-Axel Zagadou was absent against TSG due to foot pain. Recently, however, the defender has made progress, so hopes of playing in the relegation first leg are justified. On Tuesday, both were on the training ground.

VfB Stuttgart – Hamburger SV today in the live ticker: Jatta and Reis at the Dino again?

HSV coach Tim Walter had to do without Ludovit Reis (34th yellow card) and Bakery Jatta (yellow-red suspension) on Matchday 5 against SV Sandhausen. Laszlo Benes and Ransford Königsdörffer moved into the starting line-up for the two. In the relegation against VfB, however, Reis and Jatta are available again.

Although Hamburg narrowly missed out on direct promotion against Sandhausen last Sunday only due to Heidenheim's last-minute victory, coach Walter is looking forward to relegation in a positive way. There is a "now more than ever" atmosphere in his team, he said at the press conference. As usual, they were combative: "We will continue to fight, we will continue to step on the gas."

VfB Stuttgart – Hamburger SV today in the live ticker: Traditional duel in the relegation play-off

Stuttgart/Hamburg - The excitement is palpable. Because on Thursday (20.45 CET/Sat.1) the relegation first leg between VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV will take place for the last Bundesliga starting place for the 2023/24 season. There is immense amount at stake for both traditional clubs. VfB could be relegated for the third time in seven years, while HSV will finally want to return to the top flight after five years in the second division.
