Argentina's first division match between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia was halted Saturday night during the first half after a fan died in a fall at the Monumental Stadium.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred not long after the start of the game, when the central referee finally stopped the game in the 25th minute after a 53-year-old man plunged about 15 meters from the top of the stadium onto concrete.
River Plate released a statement not long after stating that the fan "jumped": "River Plate regrets to announce that in the afternoon game against Defensa y Justicia, a fan jumped from his stands dead on the spot. The medical service immediately arrived at the scene of the incident, as did the police and various security officials. The Sabori Elta stand, where the deceased had his subscription, was at 90% capacity. At the time of the fall, there was no third-party intervention. Another nation that there was no violence or anything similar. After 30 minutes, the stadium was completely evacuated."
