Gut feeling and giant reflexes lead to relegation

2023-06-04T19:50:34.872Z

Highlights: SV Münsing defeats SG Aying/Helfendorf 4:2 on penalties. Coach Ralf Zahn followed his gut feeling and brought on goalkeeper Tobias Werner for Michael Hirn two minutes before the end of extra time. He thanked it with two saved penalties and kept his team in the district league. Over 90 minutes, the match offered a mirror image of the first leg, which Münsinger had won 1-0. "We didn't manage to get rid of our nervousness for more than 90 minutes," said the coach after the game.

Thriller in the second relegation match: SV Münsing defeats SG Aying/Helfendorf 4:2 on penalties. Münsing's substitute goalkeeper Tobias Werner saves two penalties.

Aying/Münsing – SV Münsing is playing in the district league for another year. To do so, however, the newly promoted team had to go the maximum distance in the second relegation match: 90 minutes, extra time, penalty shoot-out – which was ultimately decided by the coach's gut feeling and the goalkeeper's strong reflexes.

"I had the feeling that he was going to win the game for us," said Ralf Zahn, explaining why he made a change in goal two minutes before the end of extra time, putting Tobias Werner between the posts for Michael Hirn. Six penalties later, the coach and goalkeeper were in each other's arms: Werner had parried the shots of Ayingen veterans Vitus Hörterer and Benedikt Wohlschläger; another penalty went wide of Werner's box. The result was a 4-2 win against SG Aying/Helfendorf.

Münsinger fans on the verge of a nervous breakdown

"It wouldn't have needed that," Ralf Zahn took a deep breath after a game that had brought many Münsinger supporters among the 504 paying spectators to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Over 90 minutes, the match offered a mirror image of the first leg, which Münsing had won 1-0. This time, the team led by captain Florian Buchloh was less confident. "We didn't manage to get rid of our nervousness for more than 90 minutes," Ralf Zahn puzzled after the game. "We made a lot of mistakes and were tactically anxious. But you don't win a relegation with fear."

Geiger's bold shot hits the post

Perhaps the game would have come to a quick end if Michael Geiger had been rewarded with a goal for the courage to open the game with a shot from full speed in the first Münsinger attack. But the ball crashed into the far post. In the period that followed, the guests had several reasons to take a deep breath. About 20 minutes later, when Wohlschläger lobbed the ball, which Vitus Hörterer had threshed forward over half the pitch, over goalkeeper Hirn, but also over the crossbar.

Goalless it went into the cabins. With a lot of verve, both opponents came out again. Münsing's Stefan Mannweiler missed the ball from an acute angle (50th), on the other side Michael Demmel first failed to get past goalkeeper Michael Hirn and with the follow-up shot on a defender's leg. As a passer, Demmel had more fortune: He used his pass to Wohlschläger to give SG a 1-0 lead.

Aying plays "a bit of hara-kiri" at the end

Since no further goals were scored in regular time, 15 minutes were added twice. Nine minutes had run off the clock in injury time when Ole Freytag increased the lead to 2-0 for the hosts. Münsing seemed to be on the ground. "Unfortunately, we didn't manage to keep the 2-0 up any longer. Instead, we played a bit of hara-kiri at the back," said a disappointed SG coach Dragan Kovacevic after the end of the game. The beneficiary was substitute Constantin Schmid, who brought Münsing back into the game with his follow-up goal to make it 1-2. And then Ralf Zahn suddenly felt such a feeling in his stomach...
