Haifa's city council passed a unanimous decision Tuesday evening to name a street in the city after Sergei Balanchuk, a resident of the city and a former Maccabi Haifa player who was killed in the war in Ukraine. The proposal was put forward by council member Kirill Kartnik, with the street next to the Russian consulate in the city.
Blancchuk, a former defender for the Greens, played for Maccabi Haifa between 1996-1999. He worked in his final years as a mediator after qualifying as a lawyer and at the age of 47 volunteered for the Ukrainian army as soon as Russian troops invaded. He insisted on being at the front despite his age and was killed in battle in the Donbass region.
