Outside the Lines: Aarele Weisberg on the Ticket Storm in the Basketball Playoff Finals (Walla System!)

In the shadow of the heated confrontation between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv over the distribution of tickets before the first game of the playoff finals, former player Or Goren attacked the Yellows in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"All those who are appalled by Maccabi Tel Aviv's behavior before the derby and their disregard for the rules of the administration, lol, you guys make me laugh," Goren wrote. "What is happening today in the public, in the media and even in the administration and the Basketball Association is a hundred times, actually a thousand times, and the truth is a million times better than it was 40 years ago when Maccabi Tel Aviv was a team with a state."

Goren continued: "Generations of children grew up in the State of Israel brainwashed and fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv, which did almost everything illegal possible in order to win. Buying judges, observers, coaches, rabbis, police officers, disciplinary committees and much more. Defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv was impossible at the time, and the public atmosphere and attitude against those who dared and tried (and occasionally succeeded) to beat Maccabi Tel Aviv was like a great Israel-hating god. For those who are surprised today, it's only because things are starting to come out a bit."

Goren, 66, is fifth on the Israeli Basketball Premier League's all-time scoring chart, ahead of only Doron Jamtzi, Mickey Berkowitz, Ofer Eshed and Boaz Yanai. He led Hapoel Gevet/Yagur to the State Cup in 1975/76, after eliminating Maccabi Tel Aviv in the eighth final and beating Hapoel in the final, the first time in history that a team outside Tel Aviv won any title. Later he also played for Hapoel and Maccabi Ramat Gan, Elitzur Netanya, Hapoel Galilee Elion, Elitzur Ramle, Beitar Tel Aviv and Maccabi Hadera, and over the years made 77 appearances for the Israeli national team.
