Barcelona reacted on Wednesday evening to the official announcement of Leo Messi's move to Inter Miami, in a style seen by many as surprising and sarcastic. The club said: "On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player's father and representative, informed club president Joan Laporta of the player's decision to join Inter Miami, despite being presented with an offer from Barca, in light of the desire of both Barcelona and Lionel - that Messi wear the Blaugrana uniform again.
"President Laporta understood and respected Messi's decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, farther from the spotlight and the pressure he has been under in recent years.
"Both Laporta and Jorge Messi agreed to work together to promote a fitting tribute from Barca fans to pay tribute to the footballer who was, is and will always be loved by Barca."

The Argentine admitted he wanted to return to Barcelona but decided to move to Inter Miami due to uncertainty at Barca, who still need to complete several stages of their financial plan. He claimed in an interview that he had not received any concrete offer from Barcelona, but this was concealed by the club in his statement. Also, the reference to him choosing to compete in the league "with less pressure" was seen as almost sarcastic.
