Barcelona has issued a statement on Wednesday in which it admits the intention of Juventus to negotiate its abandonment of the Superliga project and in turn leaves in the air its participation in it pending the resolution issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on whether UEFA and FIFA incur in abuse of dominant position in the organization of the International club competitions.
"FC Barcelona confirms receipt of the communication signed by Mr. Gianluca Ferrero, current president of Juventus Turin, yesterday, June 6, 2023. In accordance with current and contractual obligations, FC Barcelona will maintain the strictest confidentiality regarding future discussions with Juventus in order to assess their potential withdrawal from the European Super League project. FC Barcelona once again recalls that the project is currently in the middle of a judicial procedure pending resolution by the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg. The ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union will be essential to ensure the need for legal certainty as to the proper and correct interpretation of the legal framework of professional football in Europe. This resolution, which is expected to be issued in the coming months, will determine the definitive position of Barça in this matter, "reads the statement of the Barça club.
Barcelona's communication does not refer to UEFA's pressure for Juventus to take that step, as sources close to A22, the promoter of the Super League, said on Tuesday. Nor is there a categorical statement from the Barça entity about its permanence in the project. Everything indicates in the letter that it will be the resolution of the CJEU that will condition whether Barcelona remains in the Super League or also decides to end the attempt to create a competition to replace the Champions League organized by UEFA.
