Maccabi Haifa pressured the player of the season to stay and hoped that the connection between him and owner Yaakov Shahar would help keep him, but the player was tempted by the high offer he received. This is not an easy professional blow for the club, which in one summer loses its best player and also the coach who signed off on the dizzying success of the last three years, when an inexperienced coach was appointed in his place. Mohammed Abu Fani, who was one of the key players last season, is also in advanced talks with Ferencváros and is also nearing a departure.
Atzili arrived at Maccabi Haifa in January 2021, returned mid-season from Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia, and immediately became a key player and established himself as the best Israeli player in the league. He finished the season as the league's top scorer with 21 goals in addition to 12 assists. He was named Player of the Year and led the Greens to a third consecutive championship.
